Association of antibiotics and heavy metal arsenic to horizontal gene transfer from multidrug-resistant clinical strains to antibiotic-sensitive environmental strains

Ashish Kothari et al.

Summary: The emergence of multidrug-resistant bacteria poses a significant threat to global public health. Majority of clinical bacteria are found to be multidrug-resistant, with antibiotic resistance genes on their plasmids that can be horizontally transferred. The presence of optimal concentration of antibiotics or heavy metals facilitates horizontal gene transfer. High levels of arsenic in water were discovered in the Shukratal region of India, corresponding to high serum arsenic levels in infected individuals and increased antibiotic resistance in bacterial strains isolated from that area. This research highlights the imminent threats to global health due to improper waste disposal, increased antibiotic concentrations and human interference.

Enrofloxacin-induced transfer of multiple-antibiotic resistance genes and emergence of novel resistant bacteria in red swamp crayfish guts and pond sediments

Xuexia Jin et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) can be transferred from environmental microbes to human pathogens, thus leading to bacterial infection treatment failures. Our findings showed that enrofloxacin application also increased the relative abundance of various ARGs in addition to quinolone-resistance genes and induced ARG dissemination in crayfish gut and sediment bacteria. Transposase-mediated recombination was identified as the major driver of horizontal gene transfer (HGT) of ARGs under antibiotic stress.

The Mechanisms of Silkworm Resistance to the Baculovirus and Antiviral Breeding

Zhaoyang Hu et al.

Summary: Silkworm is an economic insect and a model organism for life science research. The disease caused by Bombyx mori nucleopolyhedrovirus (BmNPV) is a major infectious disease in the sericulture industry, causing over 60% of cocoon loss. The most effective solution is breeding disease-resistant varieties through genetic modification, but the mechanism of disease resistance needs to be understood. Researchers have found candidate genes through various techniques and obtained disease-resistant varieties through hybrid breeding, RNA interference, and genetic modification. This article reviews the research advances in silkworm resistance to BmNPV and encourages further exploration of disease resistance genes and breeding of disease-resistant silkworms.

Deterministic Effect of pH on Shaping Soil Resistome Revealed by Metagenomic Analysis

Zishu Liu et al.

Summary: Soil is the major reservoir of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), particularly multidrug efflux pump genes, which have raised concerns due to their high prevalence in natural soil ecosystems. This study examined the influence of soil pH on the selection and composition of multidrug efflux pump genes in soil resistomes. The findings indicate that acidic soil environments significantly enrich multidrug efflux pump genes, reflecting the benefits of high soil proton activity on these genes.

A sustainable and economic strategy to reduce risk antibiotic resistance genes during poultry manure bioconversion by black soldier fly Hermetia illucens larvae: Larval density adjustment

Shi-Hua Niu et al.

Summary: Black soldier fly larvae have the ability to convert organic waste into a sustainable resource. This study found that a density of 100 larvae cultured in 100 g of manure resulted in the best elimination of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), although the deposition of ARGs in the larval gut increased with higher larval density. The adjustment of larval density can effectively manage the risk of ARGs during the bioconversion process of black soldier fly larvae manure.

Antibiotic resistance genes in landfill leachates from seven municipal solid waste landfills: Seasonal variations, hosts, and risk assessment

Yangqing Wang et al.

Summary: This study reveals the presence of abundant antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in landfills and landfill leachate, posing a significant threat to the environment. The study focuses on the seasonal variation of three specific antibiotic resistance genes (sulI, tetO, and tetW) in Chinese municipal solid waste landfill leachates over two years. The study also identifies the bacterial hosts of these resistance genes and evaluates their risk levels. The results demonstrate the high health risk associated with antibiotic resistance in landfills, particularly in genes that are abundant in the human-associated environment, have gene mobility, and possess pathogenicity.

Effects of heavy metals pollution on the co-selection of metal and antibiotic resistance in urban rivers in UK and India*

Sonia Gupta et al.

Summary: The study investigates the relationship between heavy metal pollution and antibiotic resistance in river systems. The results indicate that high metal concentrations promote the abundance of metal and antibiotic resistance genes and affect bacterial communities, leading to the development of multi-metal and multi-antibiotic resistance. Network analysis demonstrates the positive relationships between metal resistance genes and antibiotic resistance genes, as well as the potential role of integrons in the co transmission of these genes. The findings highlight the need to consider metal pollution in controlling antibiotic resistance transmission.

Globally distributed mining-impacted environments are underexplored hotspots of multidrug resistance genes

Xinzhu Yi et al.

Summary: Mining activities have significant environmental impacts and can co-select for antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in microorganisms. However, ARGs in mining-impacted environments are poorly understood. In this study, a comprehensive investigation of ARGs in globally distributed mining sites was conducted. The results showed that the total abundance of ARGs in these sites was comparable to urban sewage but higher than freshwater sediments. Multidrug resistance genes accounted for a substantial portion of the total ARG abundance and tended to co-occur with multimetal resistance genes. Additionally, high-quality ARG-carrying genomes were identified, expanding the phylogenetic diversity of ARG hosts and revealing potential pathogens. These findings suggest that mining-impacted environments are important reservoirs of multidrug resistance genes.

Insights into microbial contamination in multi-type manure-amended soils: The profile of human bacterial pathogens, virulence factor genes and antibiotic resistance genes

Lin Zhu et al.

Summary: Concerns about biological risk in the environment have been increasing. Manure has been considered a significant source of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in agricultural soil. However, the extent of microbial contamination in different manure-amended soils, including ARGs, virulence factor genes (VFGs), and human bacterial pathogens (HBPs), remains largely unknown. This study used a metagenome-based approach to investigate changes in resistome, VFGs, and HBPs in soils treated with commonly used manures. The results showed that ARGs, VFGs, and HBPs from manure could be spread into soils, and their diversity and abundance varied significantly depending on the type of manure used. The study also found a positive co-occurrence pattern between ARGs and HBPs, VFGs and HBPs, as well as ARGs and VFGs. Pig manure and silkworm excrement samples had higher levels of microbial contamination compared to other samples, suggesting that the use of these two manures increased the risk of HBPs and the dissemination of ARGs. This study confirms the prevalence and differences in resistome, VFGs, and HBPs in different manure-amended soils.
