Occurrence, sources, and spatial variation of POPs in a mountainous tropical drinking water supply basin by passive sampling

Daniel Gil Ramirez et al.

Summary: Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) including PAHs, PCBs, and OCPs are present in the Piedras river in Colombia, posing a serious threat to the drinking water supply system for over 3 million users. Silicone rubber membranes were used as passive samplers to assess the sources and spatial variation of POPs. The study revealed that the concentrations of PAHs, PCBs, and some OCPs exceeded the levels considered toxic by the EPA.

Amino-functionalized biochars for the detoxification and removal of hexavalent chromium in aqueous media

Anusha Ekanayake et al.

Summary: This study evaluated and compared the efficiency of amino-modified biochar (HDA-MPBC) and pristine biochar (MPBC) derived from Mimosa pigra in removing hexavalent chromium (Cr(VI)). The results showed that HDA-MPBC had higher Cr(VI) removal performance than MPBC, and the main mechanism involved electrostatic attraction, reduction of Cr(VI) to Cr(III), and complexation of Cr(III) with functional groups on HDA-MPBC. These findings have significant implications for the removal of Cr(VI) from wastewater.

Coupling of Advanced Oxidation Technologies and Biochar for the Removal of Dyes in Water

Carolina Gallego-Ramirez et al.

Summary: This study explores the application of biochar and advanced oxidation processes (AOPs) in the removal of dyes from water. The coupling of biochar and AOPs has been found to be more effective than individual treatments. This research opens up new perspectives for the treatment of water polluted with dyes.

Development of prediction models for adsorption properties of chitin and chitosan for micropollutants

Chul-Woong Cho et al.

Summary: The study found that the adsorption affinities of chitin and chitosan for micropollutants depend on the chemical structures and exhibit similar properties. Experimental and calculated descriptors can predict their adsorption properties accurately, with impurities having a negligible effect on adsorption. The main driving forces of chitin and chitosan were identified as the H-bonding donor moment and ionic electrostatic attraction.

Predicting adsorption of micropollutants on non-functionalized and functionalized multi-walled carbon nanotubes: Experimental study and LFER modeling

Yufeng Zhao et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigated the adsorption affinities of micropollutants onto multi-walled carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) with different functional groups. The results showed that functionalized MWCNTs exhibited different adsorption affinities for charged compounds, and the adsorption affinity could be accurately predicted using LFER models. The models also provided insights into the adsorption mechanism and contribution of individual intermolecular interactions.
