Salt tolerance-based niche differentiation of soil ammonia oxidizers

Xiangxin Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigated the composition and genomic adaptations of active ammonia oxidizers in a saline-sodic soil with high salinity and pH, revealing strong nitrification activities from both AOA and AOB. The dominant ammonia oxidizers in the solonetz soil were identified as members of the Nitrosococcus, while the farmland soil had dominant members of the Nitrosospira. Genomic analysis showed unique adaptations in Candidatus Nitrosococcus sp. Sol14 to facilitate osmotic and pH homeostasis in extreme habitats with excessive Na+ content. Salt-tolerance mechanisms were identified as the main driver for niche differentiation of ammonia oxidizers in saline-sodic soils.

Structure and function of the soil microbiome underlying N2O emissions from global wetlands

Mohammad Bahram et al.

Summary: Wetland soils are the dominant source of N2O emissions, but the microbial players and processes involved are not well understood. This study found that the abundance of nitrifying archaea is a key factor explaining N2O emissions from wetland soils globally. Climate change and environmental changes may enhance the presence of these archaea and transform wetland soils into an even greater source of N2O.

Landscape Change Affects Soil Organic Carbon Mineralization and Greenhouse Gas Production in Coastal Wetlands

Ping Yang et al.

Summary: Plant invasion and aquaculture activities have significant impacts on soil organic carbon mineralization and greenhouse gas production in coastal wetlands. This study conducted investigations in tropical and subtropical regions of China, and found that Spartina alterniflora marshes had the highest SOC mineralization rate, followed by aquaculture ponds and native mudflats. Further studies should focus on improving census and monitoring of coastal habitats in China, as well as enhancing spatial resolution through more sampling in the southern provinces.

Land use and land cover changes in coastal and inland wetlands cause soil carbon and nitrogen loss

Lishan Tan et al.

Summary: This study conducted a global meta-analysis on 487 sites to investigate the impact of different types of land use and land cover change (LULCC) on soil carbon (C) and nitrogen (N) dynamics in wetlands. The results showed that conversion of wetlands to various LULCC types decreased soil C and N concentrations and stocks significantly. The loss of wetland soil C due to LULCC could lead to potential CO2 emissions, highlighting the importance of sustainable land management for wetland conservation in mitigating climate change.

Assessing nutrient budgets and environmental impacts of coastal land-based aquaculture system in southeastern China

Ping Yang et al.

Summary: Aquaculture can lead to serious environmental pollution in coastal areas. Nutrient budget analysis in land-based aquaculture ponds can help understand the fate of nutrients and aid sustainable management. In this study, nitrogen and phosphorus budgets in shrimp monoculture ponds were analyzed, showing commercial feed as the main input and biomass harvesting and sedimentation as major outputs. Drainage from the ponds contributed to nutrient discharge into the river estuary, and unresolved factors like volatilization and seepage were identified affecting the accuracy of the nutrient budgets.

Agroforestry reclamations decreased the CO2 budget of a coastal wetland in the Yangtze estuary

Guishu He et al.

Summary: The study investigates the response of CO2 budget in coastal wetlands to agroforestry reclamations. The results show that agroforestry conversions substantially decrease the CO2 fixation service by changing the ecosystem's structure and function, with wetland vegetation productivity decrease being the main reason. The interannual variability of NEE is primarily attributed to functional changes rather than meteorological variations, suggesting the importance of wise land-use policy and management measures in reclaimed coastal areas for global warming mitigation.

Spartina alterniflora invasion controls organic carbon stocks in coastal marsh and mangrove soils across tropics and subtropics

Shaopan Xia et al.

Summary: Studies have shown that the invasion of smooth cordgrass affects the storage and stability of soil organic carbon in wetlands, leading to changes in SOC storage. The impact of smooth cordgrass invasion varies in different types of wetlands, with mangrove wetlands being most severely affected and requiring efforts to restore native vegetation.

Four decades of nitrous oxide emission from Chinese aquaculture underscores the urgency and opportunity for climate change mitigation

Yangen Zhou et al.

Summary: The N2O emissions from Chinese aquaculture systems have increased significantly over the past 41 years, with most of the increase coming from freshwater fish farming in Guangdong and Hubei provinces. Choosing low-emission species and improving feed efficiency can help reduce aquaculture N2O emissions for a sustainable and climate-resilient industry.

Ammonia-oxidizing bacteria play an important role in nitrification of acidic soils: A meta-analysis

Yongxin Lin et al.

Summary: The meta-analysis of laboratory incubation studies with 1-octyne as the nitrification inhibitor shows that AOB play a more dominant role in soil nitrification in cropland than in wetland soils, indicating a major role of AOB in acidic soil nitrification. Moreover, the reduction of nitrification rate by 1-octyne is greater in soils incubated in slurry and with nitrogen additions, suggesting AOB's importance in nitrification in global acidic soils.

Mingming Jia et al.

Summary: Tidal flats in China face rapid changes, and a more accurate tidal flat map was produced using Sentinel-2 images and the automated MSIC-OA approach. Validated with high accuracy and F1 score, the CTF map provides essential information for coastal ecosystem management and the implementation of sustainable development goals related to coastal and marine areas.

Stimulation of N2O emission via bacterial denitrification driven by acidification in estuarine sediments

Xiaoxuan Su et al.

Summary: The study demonstrated that acidification stimulates N2O release from estuarine sediments, mainly mediated by bacterial denitrification; in neutral environments, N2O production is dominated by fungi. The contribution of chemo-denitrification to N2O production cannot be ignored, but is not significantly affected by acidification.
