Effects of air pollution on human health - Mechanistic evidence suggested by in vitro and in vivo modelling

Hui Chen et al.

Summary: Airborne particulate matter (PM) is a mixture of solid and liquid particles that can cause oxidative stress and inflammation when inhaled. These changes can occur both in the lungs and throughout the body due to the ability of small-sized PM (PM2.5) to enter and circulate in the bloodstream. In 2016, airborne PM was responsible for approximately 4.2 million premature deaths worldwide. Acute exposure to high levels of PM, such as during wildfires, can worsen existing illnesses like asthma and coronary heart disease, leading to hospitalization. Prolonged exposure to PM can also increase the risk of chronic non-communicable diseases affecting various organs, although the research on kidney diseases is limited. Understanding the mechanisms behind PM-induced disorders is crucial, and in-vitro and in-vivo studies can provide valuable insights. This article focuses on the acute and long-term health effects of PM exposure, including inflammation and oxidative stress, and highlights the importance of developing effective treatments to mitigate the adverse health effects of PM exposure.

How can vegetation protect us from air pollution? A critical review on green spaces' mitigation abilities for air-borne particles from a public health perspective-with implications for urban planning

Arnt Diener et al.

Summary: Air pollution leads to the highest mortality rate among global environmental risks, with vegetation and green spaces showing promising effects in reducing air-borne pollutants, particularly particulate matter (PM). However, guidance on utilizing green spaces for air quality control remains limited, highlighting the need for further research and integration of efforts in developing effective interventions.

Mapping temporal and spatial changes in land use and land surface temperature based on MODIS data

Tzu-Ling Chen

Summary: This study utilized spatial analysis to examine temporal and spatial changes in heat stress, finding an expansion of high temperature areas and changes in land use. The temperature variation between urban and rural areas was not significant, indicating a need for more efforts in mitigating extreme heat stress in urban planning.

Particulate Matter Removal Ability of Ten Evergreen Trees Planted in Korea Urban Greening

Eon Ju Jin et al.

Summary: The study revealed that broad-leaved evergreen trees have high PM adsorption capacity, especially for PM2.5. Pinus densiflora and Quercus salicina are suitable species for urban greening and PM adsorption. Analysis of the elemental composition of PM accumulated on leaves showed that it is mainly generated by human activities.

There is no economic case for new coal plants in India

Shoibal Chakravarty et al.

Summary: India is the world's third-largest emitter of CO2, with coal-fired power plants contributing a significant portion. Comparing the costs of coal and renewable power in 2018 and projections for 2025, it is shown that the average cost of electricity from most coal plants in India is higher than that of new solar and wind generators. By 2025, the cost of renewable energy with storage is expected to be comparable to the cheapest new coal plants, making it economically unfeasible to build new coal plants in India.
