Exergy analysis of a biorefinery process for co-production of third-generation L-lactic acid and electricity from Eucheuma denticulatum residues

Millicent Rosette Wan Yi Chung et al.

Summary: The study revealed that microwave-assisted autohydrolysis technology can significantly reduce the amount of macroalgae cellulosic residue needed for producing l-lactic acid; the fermentation unit, wastewater treatment unit, and combined heat and power unit are the most common locations for exergy destruction; Scenario III has the highest functional exergy efficiency and normalized exergy destruction, mainly attributed to the utilization of waste streams for value-added products and reducing reliance on fossil-fuel energy.

Carbon-based catalyst for environmental bioremediation and sustainability: Updates and perspectives on techno-economics and life cycle assessment

Vivek Kumar Gaur et al.

Summary: The global increase in waste generation has led to environmental concerns and waste management issues. Researchers have been interested in producing carbon-rich biochar from waste using different thermochemical processes. Biochar has diverse applications, from environmental remediation to energy storage, and its production is influenced by factors such as feedstock type, moisture content, heating rate, and temperature. The cost-effectiveness and eco-friendly nature of biochar have contributed to its growing popularity. This review discusses the preferred feedstock for optimizing biochar yield, factors influencing production, biochar activation approaches, synthesis techniques, and various applications of biochar. It also explores integrated closed loop approaches for biochar generation and identifies research gaps and future perspectives.

Environmental impact assessment of bio-hydrogenated diesel from hydrogen and co-product of palm oil industry

Bulin Boonrod et al.

Summary: This study compared the environmental impacts of bio-hydrogenated diesel (BHD) produced from palm fatty acid distillate (PFAD) and fatty acid methyl ester (FAME). The results showed that energy consumption of BHD-PFAD was 1.18 times higher than that of BHD-FAME, while GHG emission was 13.56 times lower. The overall environmental impacts of BHD-PFAD were also 3.58 times greater than that of BHD-FAME.

Improved biodiesel production from sludge palm oil catalyzed by a low-cost liquid lipase under low-input process conditions

Jun Mann Loh et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated an economical and sustainable enzymatic process for converting sludge palm oil into high-quality biodiesel using a low-cost liquid lipase. The results showed that a high ester content of approximately 94 wt% crude biodiesel could be produced under low-input process conditions with a low enzyme concentration and methanol-to-oil molar ratio at a low operating temperature.
