Analysis of site-specific N balances in heterogeneous croplands using digital methods

Martin Mittermayer et al.

Summary: This study determined the spatial variability of nitrogen balances on heterogeneous arable fields in southern Germany using digital methods, aiming to precisely localize N surplus and nitrogen loss potentials through a high spatial resolution. The findings showed that digital technologies are suitable for site-specific N surplus calculation but further improvement in accuracy is needed for precise management decisions, enabling the identification of N loss potentials at a sub field scale.

Trends in total nitrogen concentrations in the Three Rivers Headwater Region

Ying Li et al.

Summary: This paper analyzes the total nitrogen concentration in the Three Rivers Headwater Region (TRHR) and finds that the annual average concentrations have been increasing across the region, with some areas influenced by human activities. The study highlights the importance of monitoring and protecting the water quality in the TRHR.

A Review of Nutrient Losses to Waters From Soil- and Ground-Based Urban Agriculture-More Nutrient Balances Than Measurements

Paulien C. H. van de Vlasakker et al.

Summary: Urban agriculture has the potential to contribute to local circular economies by using organic waste as fertilizer. However, inefficient use of waste-derived fertilizers may lead to water quality impairment. More field studies are needed to determine how to achieve a sustainable circular economy without compromising water quality.

Global anthropogenic and natural nutrient fluxes: from local to planetary assessments

Anna Malago et al.

Summary: Nutrient emissions can have significant environmental impacts globally, with nitrogen surplus and phosphorus excess being major contributors to potential losses. Erosion and human wastewater also play important roles in nutrient pollution. Hotspots are identified in China and India, while localized high nitrogen rates are observed in Europe, Egypt, and North America.

Site-specific nitrogen balances based on spatially variable soil and plant properties

Martin Mittermayer et al.

Summary: This study calculated site-specific N balances in a 13.1 ha heterogeneous field using data from combine harvesters, reflectance measurements from satellites, and tractor-mounted sensors. The results showed a wide range of N surpluses within the field, with different data sources impacting the N balance outcomes. Soil organic carbon was strongly correlated with total nitrogen content, moderately correlated with N uptake, and negatively correlated with N surplus. The study highlights the need for further optimization and improvement in digital methods for accurate N balancing.

Nutrient Budgeting - A Robust Indicator of Soil-Water-Air Contamination Monitoring and Prevention

Siddhartha Shankar Bhattacharyya et al.

Summary: Nutrient budgeting techniques are essential in monitoring and preventing SWA contamination, helping to protect the ecosystem by limiting excess nutrients. Factors such as excessive fertilizer and manure use, low nutrient utilization efficiency, atmospheric deposition, and agricultural management practices can impact nutrient balance estimation. Sustainable policies and global coordinated actions are necessary to integrate different NB approaches for effective SWA contamination prevention.
