Environmental fate of microplastics in the world's third-largest river: Basin-wide investigation and microplastic community analysis

Wenke Yuan et al.

Summary: Microplastic pollution was systematically investigated in the Yangtze River Basin of China, including water, sediments, and soils. The abundance of microplastics showed a generally increasing trend from upstream to downstream, influenced by geographical and anthropogenic factors. Microplastics in sediments exhibited more prominent vertical migration than those in soils, with density and size playing key roles. The abundance and distribution of microplastics were significantly different among different compartments and correlated with geographical distance.

Human health concerns regarding microplastics in the aquatic environment- From marine to food systems

Zhihao Yuan et al.

Summary: Marine plastic waste pollution is a pressing global environmental issue that has attracted attention worldwide. This study conducts a review of microplastics, providing insight into their definition, characterization, and their presence in marine and food systems. The study reveals that plastic waste does not biodegrade but breaks down into small particles that can be ingested by organisms, posing potential risks to both human health and the environment.

Microplastics in the environment: Recent developments in characteristic, occurrence, identification and ecological risk

A. K. Priya et al.

Summary: Microplastics are persistent pollutants that are causing significant concerns for environmental health. The current state of knowledge regarding the characteristics, occurrences, and potential impact of microplastics in terrestrial ecosystems is incomplete. This study aims to review existing knowledge and scientific publications on the occurrences of microplastics in the environment, their fate and mobility, and their consequences. The review provides detailed information on the occurrences, features, and origins of microplastics in oceans, freshwater, sediments, soils, and the atmosphere, as well as data on their environmental toxicity, bioavailability, and bioaccumulation.

Abundance, characteristics, and distribution of microplastics in the Xiangjiang river, China

Lingshi Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of microplastic pollution in the sediments of the Xiangjiang River, China. The results show that the microplastic abundance is significantly higher in the lower reach of the river compared to the upper and middle reaches. Different types of microplastics exhibit different distribution characteristics, and hydrodynamic conditions play an important role in their distribution.

Spatial and temporal variations of microplastic concentrations in Portland's freshwater ecosystems

Rebecca Talbot et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between microplastic concentrations and various spatiotemporal factors in urban rivers and finds that microplastic concentrations in urban rivers are influenced by season, flow rate, and precipitation. The findings suggest that near stream factors have a stronger influence on the presence and abundance of microplastics. Fragmented microplastics are the most commonly observed morphology.

Effects of seasonal variation and resuspension on microplastics in river sediments

Feiyang Xia et al.

Summary: This study investigated the occurrence and seasonal variation of microplastics in the sediments of Liangfeng River in China. Results showed higher abundance of microplastics in sediments during the dry season compared to the rainy season, with polyethylene being the most abundant polymer. Small-sized microplastics can potentially migrate and redistribute via resuspension at different temporal and spatial scales.

Lishan Zhang et al.

Summary: The study found that microplastics in the Lijiang River are dominated by large-sized flakes and fibers, present in both freshwater and wild fishes. The most abundant polymer types in freshwater were polypropylene-polyethylene copolymer and polyethylene, while polyethylene terephthalate dominated in wild fishes.

Acute toxicity of piggery effluent and veterinary pharmaceutical cocktail on freshwater organisms

Angela C. Udebuani et al.

Summary: Intensive livestock farming has led to increased use of veterinary pharmaceuticals in many developing countries, posing a significant concern to freshwater ecosystems. Limited information exists on the potential acute toxicity of piggery effluent and veterinary pharmaceutical effluent discharged into aquatic environments. This study examined the adverse effects of piggery effluent and cocktail mixtures of common veterinary pharmaceuticals on freshwater organisms, revealing varying sensitivities of these organisms to different percentages of piggery effluent and high- and low-level doses of veterinary pharmaceuticals. The results suggest that both piggery effluent and veterinary pharmaceutical mixtures have potential toxicological effects on freshwater ecosystems.

Nano and microplastic interactions with freshwater biota ? Current knowledge, challenges and future solutions

Anna Kukkola et al.

Summary: Research on the impact of nano- and microplastics on freshwater biota is rapidly advancing, but there are significant disparities between knowledge obtained from laboratory and field studies, such as differences in plastic morphology and experimental conditions. Recommendations to address these disparities include encouraging environmental sampling in field studies and systematically testing possible factors affecting plastic toxicity in laboratory studies.

Microplastic contamination is ubiquitous in riparian soils and strongly related to elevation, precipitation and population density

Yanfei Zhou et al.

Summary: The study reveals the presence of microplastic contamination in soils along the Yangtze River, with higher levels of microplastics in subsoils compared to topsoils. Polyamide is the most commonly found polymer, and small microplastic particles dominate subsoil samples. Microfragments are the most common type of microplastic particle, and the contamination is positively correlated with population and precipitation but negatively correlated with elevation.
