Characterization of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) under different PM2.5 concentration in wintertime at a North China rural site

Zhuoyu Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the wintertime characteristics of photochemistry in a rural area of North China Plain. It found that the concentration of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN), a secondary pollutant of photochemical pollution, showed different diurnal variation and formation rate under different PM2.5 concentrations. The results also indicated that even under severe pollution levels, there were sufficient light intensity and precursor concentrations to generate a large amount of PAN, exacerbating haze formation.

Characteristics and sources of volatile organic compounds during high ozone episodes: A case study at a site in the eastern Guanzhong Plain, China

Lirong Hui et al.

Summary: The study conducted continuous measurements of 105 volatile organic compounds in Weinan, China from July 1 to September 19, 2019. Ozone episodes were mainly due to enhanced emissions of precursors and favorable meteorological conditions. Natural gas/liquefied petroleum gas usage was identified as the most significant contributor to VOC concentrations, while rubber/plastic industrial emissions, solvent usage, fuel evaporation, and vehicle exhaust were the main sources of ozone formation.

Aerosol Promotes Peroxyacetyl Nitrate Formation During Winter in the North China Plain

Wanyun Xu et al.

Summary: The study found that high concentrations of PAN in winter are mainly caused by VOC aging processes involving OH oxidation or photolysis, rather than ozonolysis pathways. Additionally, heterogeneous reactions on aerosols supplied key photochemical oxidants, promoting the formation of OVOC and PAN, explaining the intercorrelation between PM2.5-OVOC-PAN.

Coordinated control of PM2.5 and O3 is urgently needed in China after implementation of the Air pollution prevention and control action plan

Hui Zhao et al.

Summary: China formulated the Air Pollution Prevention and Control Action Plan (APPCAP) in 2013 to improve air quality. After its implementation, there was a significant decrease in PM2.5, PM10, SO2, and CO concentrations, while NO2 remained unchanged and O-3 concentration increased. Despite the decrease in PM2.5, over 65% of the population was still exposed to levels higher than the standard, indicating the need for continued efforts in air pollution control.

Formation of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and its impact on ozone production in the coastal atmosphere of Qingdao, North China

Yuhong Liu et al.

Summary: Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) plays a crucial role in ozone formation in the coastal atmosphere, with its formation controlled by both NOx and VOCs. The study reveals that the sensitivity of PAN to precursors varies with season and temperature, impacting its effects on O-3 production.

Seasonal discrepancies in peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) and its correlation with ozone and PM2.5: Effects of regional transport from circumjacent industrial cities

Mei Sun et al.

Summary: Peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) serves as a significant reservoir of nitrogen oxides that influences atmospheric oxidation capacity and regional nitrogen distribution. This study identified notable differences in PAN pollution between urban and suburban areas in Zhengzhou, central China, with higher levels observed during winter and spring. Analysis showed that the main sources of PAN pollution during colder months were short-distance air mass transport from specific regions in Henan and Hebei provinces, leading to a strong correlation between PAN and PM2.5 (and O-3) due to joint transport.

Measurement report: Fast photochemical production of peroxyacetyl nitrate (PAN) over the rural North China Plain during haze events in autumn

Yulu Qiu et al.

Summary: Photochemical pollution over the North China Plain (NCP) has raised concerns, with observations at a background site identifying high PAN concentrations, even during haze events in autumn. Polluted days are characterized by higher temperature, humidity, and anomalous southerly winds, with local photochemistry identified as the dominant factor controlling the increase in PAN. The study also highlights the important role of formaldehyde (HCHO) photolysis in secondary pollutants at lower nitrogen oxide emissions.
