Industrial Production of Organophosphate Flame Retardants (OPFRs): Big Knowledge Gaps Need to Be Filled?

Jianan Huang et al.

Summary: With the phase-out of traditional halogenated flame retardants, research interests have shifted to organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs). This study conducted an extensive survey to identify the OPFRs currently being produced in factories and investigate their annual production volume (APV). Results indicate that there are at least 56 OPFR monomers and 62 OPFR mixtures being produced in 367 factories worldwide, with 201 of them located in Mainland China. The estimated APV of OPFRs is 598,422 metric tons, which may be underestimated due to limited information availability. The study also highlights the limited research on certain types of OPFRs and provides recommendations for future research in this area.

Characterization of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and polyfluoralkyl substances (PFASs) in settled dust in specific workplaces

Elisa Sonego et al.

Summary: An analytical method was modified and optimized for the detection of flame retardants and applied to the simultaneous determination of organophosphate esters (OPEs) and polyfluoralkyl substances (PFASs) in dust samples from different workplaces and houses. The study found that the OPE pollution was more severe in workplaces, while PFAS content in house dust was over ten times higher than in workplaces.

Identification of emerging organic pollutants from solid waste incinerations by FT-ICR-MS and GC/Q-TOF-MS and their potential toxicities

Cui Li et al.

Summary: Emissions from the incineration of solid waste contain previously unrecognized chemical compounds that pose a global public health concern. Assessing the toxicity and activity of these compounds can provide valuable information for regulating and controlling the emissions from waste incineration.

A natural environmental chamber study on the emissions and fate of organophosphate esters in the indoor environment

Fang Tao et al.

Summary: This study investigated the emission and fate of 9 organophosphate esters (OPEs) in a natural environment chamber. The results showed that higher room temperature expedited the emission of OPEs to indoor air, while the room temperature and relative humidity had no effect on the levels of OPEs in dust. The study also proposed an expression based on the mass balance model, revealing a general relationship between OPEs source and sink effects in indoor environment.

Occurrence, distribution, and potential exposure risk of organophosphate flame retardants in house dust in South Korea

Hye-Ryeon Gwon et al.

Summary: The study analyzed concentrations of organophosphate flame retardants (OPFRs) in house dust samples collected from three Korean cities, showing widespread use of these compounds in Korea. Levels of OPFRs were significantly higher in Suwon compared to Jeonju and Kunsan, likely due to increased usage in Suwon. Although toddlers had a 30-fold higher estimated daily intake (EDI) of OPFRs compared to adults, the risk to human health was deemed limited.

Establishment of a Target, Suspect, and Functional Group-Dependent Screening Strategy for Organophosphate Esters (OPEs): Into the Unknown of OPEs in the Sediment of Taihu Lake, China

Langjie Ye et al.

Summary: This study developed an effective strategy for comprehensive screening of OPEs in environmental samples and successfully applied it to sediment samples from Taihu Lake. The study identified new OPEs, observed trends in OPE concentrations with distance from the lake coast, and found significant correlations between certain OPEs.

Organophosphate esters in airborne particles from subway stations

R. Olivero-Verbel et al.

Summary: In this study, concentrations of 19 organophosphate esters (OPEs) were measured in airborne fine particulate matter (PM2.5) in subway stations in Barcelona, Spain. The results show that newer subway stations have higher levels of OPEs compared to older stations. The health risks associated with OPE inhalation were found to be much lower than the threshold risk values, indicating that subway inhalation exposure is not considered dangerous for commuters.

Spatial pattern analysis reveals multiple sources of organophosphorus flame retardants in coastal waters

Xiaozhong Gao et al.

Summary: This study reveals significant pollution of PFRs in the coasts of GBA, with multiple sources such as human settlement, wastewater, manufacture, construction industry, vehicles, and shipping transport correlated to the pollutions. Spatial pattern analysis based on statistical analysis proves to be a promising method for identifying pollution sources in large-scale areas.
