Source and acquisition of rhizosphere microbes in Antarctic vascular plants

Sergio Guajardo-Leiva et al.

Summary: Rhizosphere microbial communities play critical roles in plant health, nutrient cycling, and soil fertility. This study investigates the diversity and potential sources of microbial communities using two native Antarctic plants as models. The results show that host plant species influence the richness and diversity of bacterial communities in the rhizosphere. Additionally, environmental geographic pressures and plant species determine the species turnover between microbial communities. Bacterial communities in the rhizosphere primarily come from local soils, while fungal communities have both local and distant sources.

Ecological and functional roles of bacteriophages in contrasting environments: marine, terrestrial and human gut

Teagan L. Brown et al.

Summary: The role of bacteriophages in the microbiome is still poorly understood. However, recent metagenomic studies have provided valuable data on the genomic diversity of bacteriophages and their specific roles in microbial communities. By learning from these studies, we can focus on two aspects of bacteriophage's role in the microbiome: their ecological role in structuring bacterial populations and their contribution to microbiome functioning through encoding auxiliary metabolism genes.

Insights into the biodegradation of diesel oil and changes in bacterial communities in diesel-contaminated soil as a consequence of various soil amendments

Dhiraj Kumar Chaudhary et al.

Summary: Soil amendment is a promising strategy to enhance the biodegradation capacity of indigenous bacteria. Different soil amendments have varying effects on diesel degradation efficiency and bacterial communities, with nutrients and biochar amendments showing potential to improve biodegradation and soil physiological functions. Bacterial diversity decreases and potential diesel-degrading bacteria appear in response to soil amendments, while surfactants, oxidants, and iron nanoparticles may reduce diesel degradation efficiency.

Study of the Effects of an Accidental Diesel Fuel Spill in Norilsk

Yu S. Glyaznetsova et al.

Summary: The study of bottom sediments from the Norilo-Pyasinsk water system following an accidental diesel fuel spill in Norilsk revealed a decrease in aliphatic hydrocarbons content in a specific order. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons content sharply decreased with distance from the pollution source, indicating different sources of pollution impacting the chemical composition of the sediments.

Enhanced bioremediation of diesel oil-contaminated seawater by a biochar-immobilized biosurfactant-producing bacteria Vibrio sp. LQ2 isolated from cold seep sediment

Hanghai Zhou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated the effectiveness of immobilized biosurfactant-producing bacteria in bioremediation of diesel oil-contaminated seawater, showing significant removal efficiency through both biodegradation and adsorption. The addition of immobilized bacteria also greatly enhanced microbial growth and activity, with higher expression of degradation-related genes compared to free cell treatment.

Analyses of community structure and role of immobilized bacteria system in the bioremediation process of diesel pollution seawater

Xinge Fu et al.

Summary: The immobilized bacteria system proved to play a significant role in the degradation of diesel in contaminated seawater, promoting the growth of oil-degrading bacteria by increasing nitrogen and phosphorus content. Moreover, minimal impact was observed on the microbial composition between treated and unpolluted seawater.
