Modeling multi-level survival data in multi-center epidemiological cohort studies: Applications from the ELAPSE project

Evangelia Samoli et al.

Summary: The author evaluated methods for analysis of multi-level survival data using a pooled dataset of 14 cohorts to investigate the associations between air pollution exposure and health outcomes. Adjusting for cohort in the analysis led to stable effect estimates, but not adjusting for it resulted in substantial differences. Additionally, adjusting for small area grouping increased the standard errors of effect estimates. The study supports the necessity of accounting for between-cohort heterogeneity in multi-center collaborations using individual level data.

Long term exposure to low level air pollution and mortality in eight European cohorts within the ELAPSE project: pooled analysis

Maciej Strak et al.

Summary: The study found a significant association between air pollution and mortality, even at levels below current European and North American standards and WHO guideline values. These findings provide important insights for the revision of air quality limits and future assessments of global burden of disease.
