Determination of 123 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons and their derivatives in atmospheric samples

Zi-Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are toxic organic pollutants that have been widely detected in various regions and environmental matrices. However, not all PAHs are usually detected, and there is no established method to systematically analyze hundreds of PAHs. In this study, a gas chromatography-tandem triple-quadrupole mass spectrometry (GC-MS/MS) method was developed and successfully applied to identify and quantify 123 PAHs in marine samples.

Source identification and toxicity apportionment of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface soils in Beijing and Tianjin using a PMF-TEQ method

Huashuang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reviewed the PAH concentrations, contributions of different sources to toxicity, and cancer risks in soils from different land use types in Beijing and Tianjin. The results showed that biomass and coal combustion, vehicular emissions, and petrogenic processes were the main sources of PAHs, contributing to the PAH concentrations and toxicity in the soils. Vehicular emissions and coal combustion were identified as the major contributors to the carcinogenic potential.

The importance of compound-specific radiocarbon analysis in source identification of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons: A critical review

Miaolei Ya et al.

Summary: The sources of carcinogenic polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), which are by-products of the combustion of organic matter, have been extensively studied in the fields of environmental monitoring, environmental forensics, and organic geochemistry. Various methods, including molecular diagnostic ratios, receptor models, and stable isotope analysis, have been used to identify the sources of PAHs. However, these conventional methods have limitations that lead to ambiguous results. Compound-specific radiocarbon analysis (CSRA) is a more effective method that focuses on molecular level radiocarbon signatures to identify the sources of PAHs. CSRA has the ability to distinguish the contributions of fossil fuels and biomass burning. In this review, we highlight the advantages of CSRA and its application and prospects in PAH source identification, providing a critical resource to expand the application of CSRA in environmental science. This is the first comprehensive review of the application of CSRA for PAH source identification.

Using diagnostic ratios to characterize sources of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in the Great Lakes atmosphere

Yan Wu et al.

Summary: This study characterized PAH source profiles in the Great Lakes atmosphere using nine PAH diagnostic ratios, highlighting the importance of pyrogenic sources and the significant contribution of diesel emissions to traffic-originated PAHs. Temporal analyses revealed increasing contributions from petrogenic sources and volatilization from surfaces, as well as amplified gaps in PAH emissions between diesel and gasoline engines in recent years. The study also confirmed the usefulness of DRs, especially when combined with PMF analysis, while pointing out the limitations of using multiple DRs.

A 150-year record of black carbon (soot and char) and polycyclic aromatic compounds deposition in Lake Phayao, north Thailand

Yongming Han et al.

Summary: An improved understanding of the historical variation in the emissions and sources of black carbon and polycyclic aromatic compounds may help assess the environmental effects of the Atmospheric Brown Cloud in SE Asia. The study found that soot fluxes have been increasing in recent times, but at a lower rate than previously estimated, possibly due to a decreasing biomass burning contribution. High- and low-molecular-weight PAHs, OPAHs, and azaarenes all sharply increased after 1980, indicating a shift from biomass burning to fossil fuel combustion emissions.

Mutagenic and Cancer Risk Estimation of Particulate Bound Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons from the Emission of Different Biomass Fuels

Puneet Kumar Verma et al.

Summary: The study showed that combustion of different biomass fuels results in emission of PAHs, which have carcinogenic and mutagenic effects on human health. Coal, charcoal, and various wood types were found to emit the highest levels of PAHs, while Polyalthia longifolia emitted the least.

Parent and alkylated polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons in surface sediments of mangrove wetlands across Taiwan Strait, China: Characteristics, sources and ecological risk assessment

Qi Huang et al.

Summary: This study explored the characteristics, distributions, sources, and ecological risk of parent PAHs and A-PAHs in six mangrove wetlands across the Taiwan Strait in China. The total concentration of 36 PAHs in sediment samples varied greatly, with coal combustion and petroleum combustion identified as important contributing sources in some wetlands. Individual ecological risk assessments of A-PAHs are needed due to lack of criteria for most of them.

A review on analysis methods, source identification, and cancer risk evaluation of atmospheric polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons

Lord Famiyeh et al.

Summary: Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) are environmentally persistent, mutagenic, carcinogenic, and teratogenic compounds. This review discusses their sources, metabolism, temporal variations, and analytical methods for extraction and characterization. It recommends compound-specific isotopic analysis (CSIA) and positive matrix factorization (PMF) for detailed source analysis, highlighting challenges and limitations in using stable carbon isotopic analysis (SCIA) for PAH source apportionment.
