Daniela P. Dantas et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the economic feasibility of Amazon River prawn and tambaqui grow-outs in a subtropical region of Brazil and considered the transfer of the fish to agricultural greenhouses for the winter season. Simulations showed that all systems were economically feasible, with larger properties having shorter payback periods and greater profitability.

Microplastic pollution in urban Lake Phewa, Nepal: the first report on abundance and composition in surface water of lake in different seasons

Rajeshwori Malla-Pradhan et al.

Summary: Research investigated the presence and abundance of microplastics in surface water of Phewa Lake in Nepal, with significant differences in concentration between winter and rainy seasons. Fibers were the most common type of microplastic found, with transparent being the dominant color. Most microplastics detected were < 1 mm in size, and polymer identification was not possible due to lack of equipment in Nepal. This study provides valuable baseline data on microplastics in Nepal's freshwater lake environment.

Detection of microplastics in Litopenaeus vannamei (Penaeidae) and Macrobrachium rosenbergii (Palaemonidae) in cultured pond

Thanya Reunura et al.

Summary: The presence of plastic particles in freshwater species is a global concern due to their potential impact on food security and human health. This study investigated the presence of microplastics (MPs) in economically important freshwater species, and found that both the giant freshwater prawn and white leg shrimp contained MPs in their gastrointestinal tract.

Microplastics in the high-altitude Himalayas: Assessment of microplastic contamination in freshwater lake sediments, Northwest Himalaya (India)

Kannaiyan Neelavannan et al.

Summary: This study assesses the quantity, type, and sources of microplastics in lake bottom sediments from Anchar Lake in the Northwest Himalaya. The analysis reveals that the sediments are significantly contaminated with microplastics, with the dominant polymer composition being polyamide. The presence of PVC polymers results in a high Polymer Hazard Index. However, according to the Pollution Load Index, the sediments in Anchar Lake are relatively less contaminated. The microplastics in the lake predominantly originate from the automobile, textile, and packaging industries.

Abundance, characteristics, and distribution of microplastics in the Xiangjiang river, China

Lingshi Yin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of microplastic pollution in the sediments of the Xiangjiang River, China. The results show that the microplastic abundance is significantly higher in the lower reach of the river compared to the upper and middle reaches. Different types of microplastics exhibit different distribution characteristics, and hydrodynamic conditions play an important role in their distribution.

First evidence of microplastic contamination in the freshwater of Lake Guaiba, Porto Alegre, Brazil

Crislaine Bertoldi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the contamination of microplastics in Lake Guaiba in southern Brazil and found widespread pollution of the lake with plastic particles. Fragment type was the most common morphology of microplastics, with white/transparent and red being the predominant colors. Additionally, the research indicated that the distribution of microplastics is strongly influenced by the geohydrological characteristics of the lake, emphasizing the need for improved waste management regulations to reduce microplastic pollution in freshwater systems.

Insight into the immune and microbial response of the white-leg shrimp Litopenaeus vannamei to microplastics

Zhenlu Wang et al.

Summary: Exposure to different concentrations of microplastics had varying effects on the survival, immune-related gene expression, and microbial response of shrimp. Low concentrations did not cause immune defense responses or death but affected the bacterial composition balance, while high concentrations induced immune responses, microbial changes, and even death. These findings contribute to our understanding of the impacts of microplastics on aquatic organisms.

Summary: Microplastics (MPs) were studied in beach sands, surface waters, and suspended sediments in Mazatl'an, Mexico. The study found that MP contamination is influenced by rainfall and population density, with the most abundant shapes being white/clear fragments and fibers. The highest MP fluxes were observed in suspended sediments during the rainfall season.
