Comparison of microbial communities in replicated woodchip bioreactors

Abby Schaefer et al.

Summary: This study used quantitative PCR and sequencing techniques to analyze microbial communities in woodchip bioreactors. The results showed dynamic microbial communities with persistent taxa between different sampling years and hydraulic retention times. The similarities in functional gene copy numbers suggest that the potential for denitrification is conserved across different microbial communities. The study recommends focusing on woodchip bioreactor microbial community membership in future research.

Denitrifying bioreactor microbiome: Understanding pollution swapping and potential for improved performance

Lindsey M. Hartfiel et al.

Summary: Denitrifying woodchip bioreactors are efficient in reducing nitrate-nitrogen loading to surface waters, although performance indicators vary. Besides denitrification, other microbial processes exist in these systems, highlighting the importance of considering microbial metabolism in bioreactor studies. Further research should draw from soil and wetland ecology to understand and manage bioreactor microbiomes effectively.

Isolation and characterization of psychrotolerant denitrifying bacteria for improvement of nitrate removal in woodchip bioreactors treating agricultural drainage water at low temperature

Arnaud Jeglot et al.

Summary: A study isolated denitrifying bacteria from woodchips and wetland soil, with the dominant strains belonging to the Pseudomonadaceae family and Pseudomonas genus. Among the identified strains, P. proteolytica WBRS105 and P. chlororaphis PSS4 were selected as bioaugmentation candidates, showing the ability to compete with existing microbes and enhance nitrate removal rates at low temperatures in laboratory conditions.

Identification of nosZ-expressing microorganisms consuming trace N2O in microaerobic chemostat consortia dominated by an uncultured Burkholderiales

Summary: This study demonstrates that N2O reduction can occur in microoxic environments and reveals the important role of uncultured Burkholderiales taxa and Dechloromonas-like nosZ subclade in N2O reduction. Co-expression of nosZ and ccoNO/cydAB genes suggests a survival strategy of microorganisms in microoxic environmental niches.

Paired denitrifying bioreactors with wide orientation for increased drainage flow capacity

Bryan M. Maxwell et al.

Summary: Denitrifying bioreactors are an effective way to reduce nitrate loads in subsurface agricultural drainage. The study examined the performance of paired bioreactors in a large field in Illinois, USA and found that increasing the cross-sectional area improved flow capture, while short hydraulic retention times (HRTs) limited nitrate removal efficiency.

Paired denitrifying bioreactors with wide orientation for increased drainage flow capacity

Bryan M. Maxwell et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the cross-sectional area of the bioreactor can improve flow capture capacity, but the removal efficiency of nitrogen loads is not significant for large drainage areas. The paired bioreactor design operated as intended, but short hydraulic retention times ultimately limited nitrate removal efficiency.

Microbial controls on net production of nitrous oxide in a denitrifying woodchip bioreactor

Albin Nordstrom et al.

Summary: Denitrifying woodchip bioreactors are effective in removing NO3- from water through denitrification, but if environmental conditions do not support complete denitrification, other N transformation processes may lead to the export of NO2-, N2O, or NH4+. The study found that changes in denitrification gene abundances, temperature, and the organic carbon/NO3- ratio were key factors influencing the accumulation of NO2-, N2O, and NH4+ in the bioreactor. Temporal development in the microbial community suggested an increased potential for N2O emissions over time.

Assessing and modeling biocatalysis in field denitrification beds reveals key influencing factors for future constructions

Victoria Griessmeier et al.

Summary: This study investigated the efficiency of nitrate elimination and microbial communities in a denitrification bed over a period of more than three years. It found that temperature and hydraulic retention time are the main factors impacting denitrification efficiency, and the simple design of denitrification beds may result in different flow paths through the reactor.

Summary: Research has shown that Clade II N2O reducers may play important roles in controlling N2O emissions, with increasing attention in international journals over the years. However, there is confusion surrounding these two distinct groups of N2O reducers due to disciplinary silos and inconsistent nomenclature between Clade I and Clade II.

Freshwater Fungi as a Source of Chemical Diversity: A Review

Tamam El-Elimat et al.

Summary: This review summarizes the chemical diversity and biological activity of 199 out of 280 known freshwater fungal metabolites published from 1992 to 2020, representing at least seven structural classes. In addition to describing the metabolites themselves, strategies for the collection, isolation, and identification of fungi from freshwater habitats are discussed to enhance chemists' knowledge of mycological principles. The review is expected to serve as a springboard for future natural products studies from the underexplored group of Ascomycota.

Temperature Sensitivity and Composition of Nitrate-Reducing Microbiomes from a Full-Scale Woodchip Bioreactor Treating Agricultural Drainage Water

Arnaud Jeglot et al.

Summary: Woodchip bioreactors for denitrification are less efficient in cold temperatures, but bioaugmentation with cold-adapted denitrifying bacteria can potentially enhance nitrate removal efficiency. Enrichments of denitrifiers from woodchip material showed differences in composition compared to native microbiomes, indicating potential for efficient NO3- removal at cold temperatures.

Labile carbon release from oxic-anoxic cycling in woodchip bioreactors enhances nitrate removal without increasing nitrous oxide accumulation

Philip M. McGuire et al.

Summary: Denitrification in woodchip bioreactors treating agricultural drainage and runoff is often limited by carbon availability, but redox fluctuations through draining and re-flooding can increase nitrate removal rates. Oxic-anoxic cycling significantly improves nitrate removal rates, but may lead to enhanced N2O emissions. In DRW reactors, there was no greater N2O accumulation, suggesting that optimizing DRW cycling can enhance nitrate removal rates.
