Identification and hazard analysis of heavy metal sources in agricultural soils in ancient mining areas: A quantitative method based on the receptor model and risk assessment'

Hao Zhou et al.

Summary: This study identified the major sources of heavy metal pollution in agricultural soil in ancient mining areas using the PMF model. The SPLIzone and SELIzone methods were employed to assess the integrated pollution and ecological risks of various elements. It was found that Cu and Cd were the most contaminated elements, with mining as the major pollution source and smelting industrial activities contributing to the highest ecological risk. This study provides a quantitative method for assessing the hazards of heavy metal sources, which is valuable for the study and management of heavy metal pollution.

Health risk assessment for human exposure to mercury species and arsenic via consumption of local food in a gold mining area in Colombia

Siday Marrugo-Madrid et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the risk to human health from consuming fruits, tubers, and fish contaminated with mercury and arsenic in a Colombian area affected by gold mining activities. The results showed that children and women of childbearing age had higher levels of methylmercury intake than the recommended safety limits. The intake of arsenic and mercury exceeded the safety levels for most population groups. There was also a potential risk of carcinogenicity from arsenic intake through food. Therefore, safety control mechanisms and environmental education strategies are crucial to protect the health of residents in areas impacted by gold mining activities.

Probabilistic multi-pathway human health risk assessment due to heavy metal(loid)s in a traditional gold mining area in Ecuador

Samantha Jimenez-Oyola et al.

Summary: The study conducted a Bayesian probabilistic human health risk assessment related to multi-pathway exposure to heavy metal(loid)s in a gold mining area in Southern Ecuador. The results showed unacceptable risk levels for human health in both adults and children, primarily through ingestion of tap water and incidental ingestion of surface water. However, exposure to soil via accidental ingestion and dermal contact was below the safety limit, posing no risk to human health.

Artisanal and Small Gold Mining and Petroleum Production as Potential Sources of Heavy Metal Contamination in Ecuador: A Call to Action

Jose Luis Rivera-Parra et al.

Summary: Mining and petroleum production are essential for modern life but can be harmful to the environment if not properly managed. This study in Ecuador focused on analyzing the spatial distribution of hazardous elements in metallic deposits and oil reservoirs, particularly in artisanal and small-scale gold mining districts. The results highlighted the widespread distribution of potentially harmful elements, emphasizing the need for better management practices to protect public health and the environment.

Ecological and probabilistic human health risk assessment of heavy metal(loid)s in river sediments affected by mining activities in Ecuador

Samantha Jimenez-Oyola et al.

Summary: This study assessed the ecological and human health risk caused by heavy metal(loid)s exposure in river sediments in a key mining site in Ecuador, revealing severe ecological risks at most sampling stations and unacceptable carcinogenic and non-carcinogenic risks for residents exposed to polluted sediments. These results can serve as a baseline for developing public health strategies to monitor and reduce health hazards in mining communities.

Agricultural planning by selecting food crops with low arsenic accumulation to efficiently reduce arsenic exposure to human health in an arsenic-polluted mining region

Xibai Zeng et al.

Summary: This study investigated the risk of arsenic accumulation in 157 crop cultivars under different levels of contamination. The results showed that switching to planting tuber or fruit vegetables and maize in higher arsenic contaminated soils could reduce the risk of arsenic exposure to humans through dietary intake. The study provided a recommended list of preferable food crops for different contamination levels of arsenic in soils.

Ana Cristina Gonzalez-Valoys et al.

Summary: The abandoned Remance gold mine poses a potential pollution risk with toxic elements for soil, plants, water bodies, and the health of local inhabitants. The study focused on characterizing geochemical distribution of PTEs, assessing ecological and health risk, evaluating soil health, and establishing risks for local inhabitants. Soil health depends on PTE concentrations and organic matter, while both pollution load index (PLI) and potential risk index (RI) were found to be high to extreme near mining areas.
