Late Quaternary hydrographic evolution in Thessaly (Central Greece): The crucial role of the Piniada Valley

R. Caputo et al.

Summary: The hydrographic network of the Pinios River in Greece has undergone complex evolution, with its course changing due to tectonic activity and being affected by lake waters and marsh areas. The present-day Pinios River is the result of these processes.

Estimation of Threshold Rainfall in Ungauged Areas Using Machine Learning

Kyung-Su Chu et al.

Summary: In recent years, Korea has experienced abnormal changes in precipitation and temperature due to climate change, increasing the risks of climate disasters and rainfall damage. Traditional hydrological models are time-consuming and have limitations in analyzing the damage caused by rainfall in different watersheds. In this study, machine learning techniques were used to accurately predict the threshold rainfall in ungauged watersheds by collecting and calculating watershed characteristic and hydrological factors. The results showed that the XGBoost method performed well in predicting threshold rainfall and was validated through past rainfall events and damage cases.

Snow-influenced floods are more strongly connected in space than purely rainfall-driven floods

Manuela Brunner et al.

Summary: Widespread floods that cause significant damages are a concern for many catchments. In order to improve flood protection, it is necessary to understand the driving processes behind these events. This study examines the spatial flood connectedness in relation to the flood generation process, specifically distinguishing between rainfall-driven and snowmelt-influenced floods. The results show that severe floods are more likely to be associated with snow-related processes, and snow-influenced events have stronger spatial connections. These findings have implications for flood risk in a warming climate, suggesting that a decrease in snowmelt-influenced floods may result in a decrease in severe and widespread floods.

Assessing Flood Early Warning Systems for Flash Floods

Maria J. Henao Salgado et al.

Summary: This study presents a systematic literature review of 19 case studies to compare rainfall threshold estimation methods for flash floods. Four types of methods were identified: empirical, hydrological/hydrodynamic, probabilistic, and compound. Each method uses different indicators and predictor variables, which can be adjusted to local flood early warning systems. The study concludes that hydrodynamic models are reliable in rainfall threshold estimation but suggests the inclusion of uncertainty analysis and new data sources for more robust thresholds. Probabilistic methods, including uncertainty analysis with utility functions, are also valuable for improving decision-making in early warning systems.

Investigating sea-state effects on flash flood hydrograph and inundation forecasting

George Papaioannou et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of sea state on precipitation, discharge, and flood inundation forecasting, utilizing coupled models in atmospheric, ocean wave, hydrological, and hydraulic-hydrodynamic processes. The integration of sea state improved precipitation and discharge peak forecasts, enhancing inundation forecast accuracy by 4.5% and flooding additional building blocks, demonstrating the potential for operational forecasting in civil protection applications.

A rainfall threshold-based approach to early warnings in urban data-scarce regions: A case study of pluvial flooding in Alexandria, Egypt

Adele Young et al.

Summary: This study proposes a low-cost Early Warning System using rainfall thresholds to predict urban floods in Alexandria, Egypt. By analyzing historical data, observed rainfall, and ensemble precipitation forecasts, the study classified flood severity using a hazard matrix and accurately predicted severe flood events up to 24 hours in advance. This approach supports decision-making for issuing warnings and flood control actions in data-scarce regions.

A New Automatic Monitoring Network of Surface Waters in Greece: Preliminary Data Quality Checks and Visualization

Yiannis Panagopoulos et al.

Summary: Monitoring surface waters is crucial for their preservation, and the Institute of Inland Waters of the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research has established the first real-time automatic monitoring network in Greece. The data quality checks are essential, particularly for pH and dissolved oxygen sensors, and there is a need to maintain and potentially expand this monitoring network even after funding projects end.

An improved rainfall-threshold approach for robust prediction and warning of flood and flash flood hazards

Geraldo Moura Ramos Filho et al.

Summary: The improved method utilizes two tolerance levels and an intermediate threshold, resulting in a significant increase in the Probability of Detection (POD) of flood and flash flood occurrences and a reduction in false alarms. The use of exponential curves for the intermediate threshold shows improvements for almost all time steps of hydrological hazards, with the best performance seen for floods related to 8-hour peak intensity and 8-day API.
