Effect of Freeze-Thaw Cycles on Dynamic Characteristics of Undisturbed Silty Clay

Gao Hang Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, dynamic triaxial tests were conducted on undisturbed soil samples under different control parameters to investigate the dynamic characteristics of the soil under freeze-thaw cycles. The cumulative plastic strain, dynamic elastic modulus, and dynamic strength of the soil were explored and appropriate fitting formulae were proposed. The findings showed that as the number of freeze-thaw cycles increased, the cumulative plastic strain grew, the dynamic strength progressively fell, and the dynamic elastic modulus dropped first, but then increased. The critical physical and dynamic features of the soil changed significantly during one to six freeze-thaw cycles.

Stability behavior of a reservoir soil bank slope under freeze-thaw cycles in cold regions

Zipeng Qin et al.

Summary: By studying the instability of irrigation reservoir bank slopes in cold regions caused by freeze-thaw cycles, a numerical model was established to predict the slope failure based on temperature, cracks generation, and safety factors with hydrothermal variation. The results show a 10.43% decrease in safety factor after 5 freeze-thaw cycles, indicating an accelerated slope instability.

Summary: The study revealed that the shear strength and deformation characteristics of S-RM are influenced by the number of freeze-thaw cycles, showing varying trends as the cycles increase; NMR results indicated the fractal nature of the pores in S-RM, with changes in soil particle aggregation observed with increasing cycles.

Evolutions of the unfrozen water content of saturated sandstones during freezing process and the freeze-induced damage characteristics

Lei Weng et al.

Summary: In this study, LF-NMR tests were conducted on frozen sandstone samples to analyze the unfrozen water content and changes in the freezing process. The experimental results show that the pore size distribution significantly affects the speed of water-ice phase transition, with larger pores leading to faster transitions. Freeze-induced strains in frozen sandstones increase rapidly between 0 degrees C to -10 degrees C, then stabilize, and the impact of movable water on freezing strain depends on pore size distribution.

Variation features of unfrozen water content of water-saturated coal under low freezing temperature

Bo Li et al.

Summary: Experimental results show that the swelling stress of ice destroys the original pore structure of coal samples, causing a hysteresis phenomenon in the unfrozen water content during the freezing process. At the phase equilibrium stage of freezing, unfrozen water mainly exists as film water on pore surfaces and pore water in pores with radius below 10 nm, with the freezing point of water decreasing exponentially as temperature increases.
