The Role of Soil Type in Triggering Shallow Landslides in the Alps (Lombardy, Northern Italy)

Fabio Luino et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the historical shallow landslides and mud-debris flows triggered by rainfall events in northern Italy and found that soil-related factors play a significant role in differentiating landslide activation in different regions. Rainfall thresholds for landslide occurrence vary based on soil region, textural class, and dominant soil typological units. The results of this study provide valuable information for forecasting and preventing geohydrological processes and developing effective warning strategies to mitigate risks and reduce socio-economic damage.

A Quantitative Analysis Method of Regional Rainfall-Induced Landslide Deformation Response Variation Based on a Time-Domain Correlation Model

Tingchen Wu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a time-domain correlation model to study the impact of rainfall on landslide deformation and optimize the monitoring indicator system. By analyzing historical data from specific locations, it was found that different landslide areas have different rainfall-landslide deformation correlations, which can provide early warning for landslides with a lag time.

Morphological Changes Detection of a Large Earthflow Using Archived Images, LiDAR-Derived DTM, and UAV-Based Remote Sensing

Massimo Conforti et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the geological and geomorphological features as well as the space-time evolution of a representative large earthflow in the Apennine chain of southern Italy over a 65-year period. Using a variety of data sources and methods, the study highlights changes in topography and landslide surface over time, showing extensive lowering in the source area and significant uplift at the landslide toe, with a high increase in landslide surface over the last 65 years.

Geomorphic effects caused by heavy rainfall in the Corigliano-Rossano area (NE Calabria, Italy) on 12 August 2015

Valeria Rago et al.

Summary: The surroundings of Corigliano and Rossano in NE Calabria were damaged by a short-lasting and localized rainstorm on 12 August 2015, causing over 100 million euros in damage. The main slope-stability controlling factors and an event-based geomorphological landslide inventory of the most damaged sector were mapped. Estimated rain maxima significantly exceeded measured values, with ground effects matching the heavily stricken areas.

A quantitative approach for debris flow inception and propagation analysis in the lead up to risk management

Mariantonietta Ciurleo et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a methodology for quantitative analysis of debris flows in weathered gneiss using physically based models. The models consider both triggering and propagation stages of landslides, providing valuable information for risk assessment and design of risk mitigation structures. The applicability of the methodology has been demonstrated through testing on real debris flow events, validating the results obtained from the models.

Summary: This study investigates the influences of different attribute interval numbers and data-based models on the accuracy of landslide susceptibility prediction. Results demonstrate that the prediction accuracy gradually increases with the increase in attribute interval numbers for a specific model, and the random forest model has the highest prediction accuracy as the attribute interval numbers increase.

Modeling Shallow Landslide Susceptibility and Assessment of the Relative Importance of Predisposing Factors, through a GIS-Based Statistical Analysis

Massimo Conforti et al.

Summary: This study evaluated shallow landslide susceptibility in the Mesima basin in Italy using geomorphological research and identified 18 predisposing factors. Results showed that slope gradient, TWI, soil texture, and lithology were the most important factors influencing shallow landslide susceptibility in the area. The logistic regression model generated a susceptibility map with five classes, showing that 26.1% of the study area had high or very high susceptibility to shallow landslides.

Summary: The study evaluated the impacts of vegetation cover and climate change on landslide hazards in a Pyrenean valley through an innovative method. Results showed that vegetation significantly influences slope stability and that future land cover and socioeconomic scenarios will impact hazard levels. Climate change is also expected to increase landslide hazards in the area.

Landslide susceptibility mapping using statistical methods in Uatzau catchment area, northwestern Ethiopia

Azemeraw Wubalem

Summary: Uatzau basin in northwestern Ethiopia is prone to landslides, and a landslide susceptibility mapping study was conducted using GIS-based frequency ratio, information value, and certainty factor methods. The study identified six factors affecting landslides and categorized the area into different susceptibility classes. Results showed high accuracy in identifying landslide-prone zones. The statistical methods used in this study can be recommended for landslide susceptibility mapping and regional land use planning for landslide hazard mitigation.
