Eco-friendly fermentation module for maximization of hydrogen harvesting from fatty restaurant waste diluted with grey water

Nawaf S. Alhajeri et al.

Summary: Valorization of fatty restaurant waste is a promising method for economic and environmental benefits, but the lipid fraction hampers the hydrogen fermentation process. In this study, three staged hybrid reactors were used for lipid degradation and H2 harvesting from co-digestion of fatty restaurant waste and grey water. The hydrogen harvesting volumes were 0.3 ± 0.02 L/L.d in HR1, 0.22 ± 0.1 LH2/L.d in HR2, and 0.11 ± 0.06 LH2/L.d in HR3. Different microbial phyla were dominant in each reactor, indicating the impact of staging on microbial composition.

Innovative approach for rapeseed straw recycling using black solider fly larvae: Towards enhanced energy recovery

Mahdy Elsayed et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the bio-recycling of rapeseed straw mixed with chicken manure using black soldier fly larvae for biodiesel and protein production. The results showed that 20% rapeseed straw ratio resulted in high fiber biodegradation, increased larval biomass yield, and lipid accumulation. The addition of 20% rapeseed straw also shortened the larval development time and improved survival rate and conversion efficiency. The produced biodiesel from 20% rapeseed straw had higher saturated fatty acids content and cetane number compared to biodiesel produced from rapeseed oil. Furthermore, the application of black soldier fly larvae technology could reduce CO2 emissions.

Sulphonated graphene catalyst incorporation with sludge enhanced the microbial activities for biomethanization of crude rice straw

Aya Y. Ibrahim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the enhancement of biomethanization of crude rice straw using the combination of sulphonated graphene and sludge rich anaerobes. The addition of sludge rich in anaerobic microbes resulted in a reduction of cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin content in the rice straw. The addition of sulphonated graphene catalyst further increased these reductions. Bacteria and archaea species utilized reducing sugars, phenols, and volatile fatty acids for biomethanization. These findings demonstrate the potential of using sulphonated graphene and sludge rich in anaerobes to improve the fermentation of crude rice straw and increase biogas production.

Summary: In this study, the H-2 production from supercritical water gasification (SCWG) of chicken manure was investigated. The results showed that increasing temperature and residence time promoted H-2 yield, hydrogen gasification efficiency, and carbon gasification efficiency. A kinetic model indicated that higher temperature accelerated the reaction rate and facilitated the water gas shift reaction (WGSR) for H-2 production. The hydrolysis reaction of chicken manure played a crucial role in H-2 production.
