Distribution of antibiotic resistance genes in the sediments of Erhai Lake, Yunnan-Kweichow Plateau, China: Their linear relations with nonpoint source pollution discharges from 26 tributaries

Xiong Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between 25 antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and nonpoint source pollution in the Erhai basin. The results show that while the overall abundance of ARGs in Erhai Lake is low, individual genes like sulfonamide resistance genes are high. Regression analysis reveals that the discharge of nonpoint source pollution significantly affects the distribution of ARGs, with total phosphorus pollution showing a more significant impact than total nitrogen pollution.

Multiple roles of nanomaterials along with their based nanotechnologies in the elimination and dissemination of antibiotic resistance

Zhixiang Xu et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance has become a global health concern, with antibiotic resistance genes frequently detected in various environmental media. This review focuses on the influence of nanomaterials on the removal and horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance genes. It elaborates on the occurrence, behavior, and potential hazards of antibiotic resistance genes, summarizes nanomaterials-mediated antibiotic resistance removal, discusses the influence of nanomaterials on the horizontal gene transfer of antibiotic resistance genes, and highlights the tradeoff between their elimination and transfer. This review enhances our understanding of nanomaterials-mediated dissemination of antibiotic resistance and alerts us to reconsider the reasons for ARGs spread and the potential detriment of nanomaterials in complex ecological environments.

Occurrence of antibiotics and antibiotic resistance genes in the Fuxian Lake and antibiotic source analysis based on principal component analysis-multiple linear regression model

Bin Zhao et al.

Summary: The study investigated the source contribution and correlations between antibiotics and ARGs in surface water of Fuxian Lake. Results showed that SMX and OFL were the dominant antibiotics and their corresponding ARGs posed medium risk to aquatic organisms, mainly originating from anthropogenic sources. The presence of ARGs in the lake was significantly lower than in inflowing rivers, suggesting inconsistent correlations between antibiotics and ARGs in the lake.

Yongqiang Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of ARGs in typical inland salt-lakes in China, analyzing their relationship with antibiotics, microbial communities and water quality. The results showed that sulfonamide resistance genes were the main pollution ARGs, and there was a non-corresponding relationship between ARGs and antibiotics. The bacterial genera were found to be the main driver of ARGs distribution pattern in highly saline lake sediment.
