Summary: Maintaining natural thermal regimes in montane stream networks is critical for species. We studied bull trout populations across a latitudinal gradient and found that their distribution is influenced by temperature. Warm summer temperatures in southern streams limit bull trout distributions, while unsuitably cold temperatures in northern streams may also be limiting. Differences in winter freezing extent among northern streams further restrict suitable habitat distributions.
