Multi-factor reconciliation of discrepancies in ozone-precursor sensitivity retrieved from observation- and emission-based models

Danni Xu et al.

Summary: In this study, the core factors leading to discrepancies in ozone precursors (OPS) were identified in Shanghai, China, by applying observation-based models and emission-based models simultaneously. By resolving these factors, the reliability of OPS estimation was improved. The contributions of different factors to OPS discrepancies were analyzed in urban and suburban settings based on differences in emission and transport characteristics.

Understanding the underlying mechanisms governing the linkage between atmospheric oxidative capacity and ozone precursor sensitivity in the Yangtze River Delta, China: A multi-tool ensemble analysis

Kaihui Zhao et al.

Summary: This study proposes an indicator, HO2/OH, based on atmospheric oxidative capacity, which effectively indicates ozone precursor sensitivity (OPS) in the Yangtze River Delta (YRD) of China. The study reveals a strong correlation between the HO2/OH indicator and OPS, as well as the influence of air transport on OPS variations. The findings contribute to a better understanding and guidance of O-3 control strategies in photochemically active regions worldwide.

Performance Evaluation of the Meteorology and Air Quality Conditions From Multiscale WRF-CMAQ Simulations for the Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS)

Ana Torres-Vazquez et al.

Summary: The Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study aimed to improve the understanding of ozone chemistry and transport from New York City to the Long Island Sound and Connecticut coastline. The study found that using higher model resolutions can enhance the simulation of sea breeze circulations, low-level jets, and boundary layer evolution, resulting in improved surface meteorology statistics and more accurate ozone predictions.

Observed sea breeze life cycle in and around NYC: Impacts on UHI and ozone patterns

Z. S. Han et al.

Summary: This observational study examines the impact of New York City on summer sea breeze fronts during a 2018 LISTOS Campaign day, showing that urban heat island effects in the morning led to convergences of air flow into the city and contributed to an ozone episode, while the merging of fronts may have exacerbated pollutant transport.

Investigating Changes in Ozone Formation Chemistry during Summertime Pollution Events over the Northeastern United States

Madankui Tao et al.

Summary: Understanding the spatial and temporal variability of ozone formation on a local scale is crucial for effective mitigation. By combining airborne remote sensing data and ground-based measurements, this study investigates changes in ozone precursors and the inferred chemical production regime on high-ozone days in two Northeast urban domains. The results show that the ratio of HCHO-VCDTrop to NO2-VCDTrop generally increases on ozone exceedance days, indicating a transition towards a more NOx-sensitive ozone production regime. Warmer temperatures and local emissions play a role in the high-ozone days, with slower wind speeds in one domain and stronger, southwesterly winds in the other.

Vertical Profiles of Ozone Concentrations in the Lower Troposphere Downwind of New York City During LISTOS 2018-2019

Maxim H. Couillard et al.

Summary: This study focused on the vertical distribution of ozone in the troposphere near central Long Island, highlighting the importance of measuring ozone aloft for a comprehensive understanding of ozone production and transport. Analysis revealed that high ozone levels in the lower troposphere are often observed on hot, sunny days with high-pressure systems, leading to the presence of distinct layers with significant ozone excursions over short vertical distances. Meteorological processes at both synoptic and local scales were found to play a crucial role in shaping the observed vertical ozone profiles.

Volatile chemical product emissions enhance ozone and modulate urban chemistry

Matthew M. Coggon et al.

Summary: Decades of air quality improvements have reduced motor vehicle emissions, with VCPs now responsible for half of petrochemical VOCs in major urban areas. VCP emissions are widespread in US and European cities, impacting air quality, as illustrated by significant emissions in New York City. The study shows that VCP emissions, especially fragranced VCPs, have a significant impact on ozone levels in urban areas.

Impact of Stratospheric Intrusions on Ozone Enhancement in the Lower Troposphere and Implication to Air Quality in Hong Kong and Other South China Regions

Kaihui Zhao et al.

Summary: Stratospheric intrusions play a significant role as a source of ozone in the troposphere, with a particular impact on O3 enhancement events in spring. Analysis of O3 sounding data from the Hong Kong Observatory over 17 years revealed a close relationship between stratospheric intrusions and tropospheric convective activities in subtropical regions. Modeling studies were able to classify synoptic patterns and quantify the impact of stratospheric intrusions on surface O3 enhancement under different weather patterns.

Improving predictability of high-ozone episodes through dynamic boundary conditions, emission refresh and chemical data assimilation during the Long Island Sound Tropospheric Ozone Study (LISTOS) field campaign

Summary: The study developed a set of potential forecast improvements to enhance the capability of a 3 km forecasting model for different pollutants. Dynamic boundary conditions significantly improved O-3 prediction, while high-resolution simulations outperformed the operational 12 km simulation for NO2, highlighting the importance of spatially resolved emission and meteorology inputs for short-lived pollutants.
