IDF Diabetes Atlas: Global, regional and country-level diabetes prevalence estimates for 2021 and projections for 2045

Hong Sun et al.

Summary: This study provides global, regional, and country-level estimates of diabetes prevalence and health expenditures for 2021 and projections for 2045. The global prevalence of diabetes is increasing and is expected to have the greatest relative increase in middle-income countries. Diabetes-related health expenditures are also projected to rise.

Associations of plasma metal levels with type 2 diabetes and the mediating effects of microRNAs

Hongli Nie et al.

Summary: This study found significant associations between several plasma metal levels and diabetes risk, as well as certain plasma miRNAs being related to diabetes risk. MiR-122-5p mediated the relationship between titanium and diabetes risk by 48.0%.

Benzo(a)pyrene induces airway epithelial injury through Wnt5a-mediated non-canonical Wnt-YAP/TAZ signaling

Lieyang Fan et al.

Summary: Wnt5a plays a crucial role in non-canonical Wnt signaling and is an important mediator in epithelial injury and lung dysfunction. This study reveals that exposure to polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) induces lung inflammation and reduces the expression of Clara cell secretory protein (CC16). The activation of Wnt5a and downstream YAP/TAZ is accompanied by the release of pro-inflammatory cytokines and contributes to lung dysfunction caused by acute exposure to PAHs.

Prevalence, Deaths and Disability-Adjusted-Life-Years (DALYs) Due to Type 2 Diabetes and Its Attributable Risk Factors in 204 Countries and Territories, 1990-2019: Results From the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019

Saeid Safiri et al.

Summary: This study reported the prevalence, deaths, and DALYs of type 2 diabetes and its risk factors in 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2019. The findings showed an increase in the global prevalence and death rates of type 2 diabetes since 1990, with low and middle-income countries carrying the highest burden.

Cross-sectional and longitudinal associations of urinary zinc with glucose-insulin homeostasis traits and type 2 diabetes: Exploring the potential roles of systemic inflammation and oxidative damage in Chinese urban adults

Zi Ye et al.

Summary: The link between zinc exposure and glucose metabolism or the development of type 2 diabetes is controversial. This study found that high levels of zinc exposure adversely affected glucose-insulin homeostasis and further contributed to an increased risk of type 2 diabetes. Inflammatory response might play an important role in this relationship.
