A new model of Notch signalling: Control of Notch receptor cis-inhibition via Notch ligand dimers

Daipeng M. Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, a new model of Notch signaling is proposed, in which ligand monomers promote Notch receptor transactivation and ligand dimers induce cis inhibition. This model provides a concrete molecular distinction between the main branches of Notch signaling and successfully recapitulates experimental results. It offers a novel perspective for understanding Notch-regulated biological processes.

Influenza seasonality and its environmental driving factors in mainland China and Hong Kong

Sheikh Taslim Ali et al.

Summary: The study found that absolute humidity is a key factor influencing the seasonality of influenza, showing a U-shaped association with transmissibility and able to predict the transmission patterns of influenza virus in different climate zones. Other climatic factors and holiday-related school closures also have a certain impact on influenza transmission.

Environmental Impacts on Infectious Disease: A Literature View of Epidemiological Evidence

Peter D. Sly et al.

Summary: This article summarizes a session from a recent conference on environmental impacts on infectious diseases. It discusses the effects of early-life exposure to chemicals on the immune system, the association between poor air quality and the severity of Covid-19, and the role of air pollution components in inducing oxidative stress.

Links between air pollution and COVID-19 in England

Marco Travaglio et al.

Summary: The study reveals a positive relationship between air pollutant concentrations, particularly nitrogen oxides, and COVID-19 mortality and infectivity. PM2.5 was identified as a major contributor to COVID-19 cases in England, with a 12% increase in cases linked to a 1 m³ increase in the long-term average of PM2.5. The findings suggest that even a small increase in air pollution could lead to a significant rise in COVID-19 infectivity and mortality rates in England.

Evidence for a Causal Relationship between the Solar Cycle and Locust Abundance

Robert A. Cheke et al.

Summary: The study analyzed the time series of abundance indices for Desert Locusts and Oriental Migratory Locusts from 1860 to 2015, revealing significant periodicities and causality links with solar activity, as well as the Southern Oscillation Index (SOI) and North Atlantic Oscillation Index (NAO). The results suggest that solar activity plays a role in driving locust abundance, while potential links with oceanic oscillation systems could improve early warning forecasting of locust upsurges.

Causal analysis of the temperature impact on deep-sea biodiversity

Hideyuki Doi et al.

Summary: The factors influencing deep-sea biodiversity include seafloor POC flux and temperature, with temperature being found to influence species richness over long time scales. Future climate change may affect deep-sea ecosystems through changes in deep-water circulation rather than surface productivity.
