Effectiveness and robustness of braced-damper systems with adaptive negative stiffness devices in yielding structures

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: This study proposes an adaptive negative stiffness amplifying damper (NSAD) by applying adaptive negative stiffness devices in braced-damper systems. The effectiveness of the proposed NSAD in controlling the inelastic seismic responses of yielding structures is investigated. The results show that the NSAD can effectively control both the acceleration and drift of structures within a certain displacement range and limit the inelastic deformation.

A novel crosswind mitigation strategy for tall buildings using negative stiffness damped outrigger systems

Meng Wang et al.

Summary: This study presents a new crosswind mitigation strategy for tall buildings by using a negative stiffness damped outrigger system. The proposed system amplifies the motion of the viscous damper, resulting in significant improvement of energy dissipation. Systematic evaluation and comparison show that the proposed system has the most satisfactory crosswind reduction effect, especially when the perimeter column stiffness is insufficient.

Impact load mitigation of meta-panels with single local resonator

Nhi H. Vo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of design parameters on the impact mitigation capacity of a new meta-panel that leveraged the coupled mechanisms of plastic deformation and local resonance to absorb energy from impact loading. The meta-panel shows a substantial reduction in the mid-span deflection and an increase in the impact energy absorption compared to conventional sandwich panels. Furthermore, parametric studies are conducted to investigate the effects of the thickness of the hollow-truss bar, core material properties, and impact velocity on the meta-panels impact-resistant behaviour.

Flexural wave attenuation by metamaterial beam with compliant quasi-zero-stiffness resonators

Changqi Cai et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a novel metamaterial beam with an embedded quasi-zero-stiffness resonator to achieve wave attenuation in very low-frequency band gaps. The configuration of the quasi-zero-stiffness resonator is developed using compliant mechanism with design optimization, and the characteristic of quasi zero stiffness is achieved by proper pre-compression. The dispersion relations of the metamaterial beam are derived using the transfer matrix method, and the dynamic responses of the beam are obtained using the spectral element method to evaluate the transmittance of the flexural wave. Experimental investigation verifies the formation mechanism of the band gaps, demonstrating very low-frequency band gaps. Therefore, the QZS metamaterial beam holds promise for low wave attenuation.

Enhanced vibration suppression using diatomic acoustic metamaterial with negative stiffness mechanism

Yuhao Liu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a diatomic-chain locally resonant acoustic metamaterial (LRAM) structure with a negative stiffness mechanism for enhanced vibration suppression. By studying the bandgap properties of the diatomic configuration, it is shown that introducing two extra bandgaps can enhance performance benefits. Converting a monoatomic configuration into a diatomic configuration is beneficial. A dispersion relation analysis reveals new phenomena in vibration power flow and wave transmittance, demonstrating the potential application of negative stiffness for performance improvement.

Adaptive Stiffness Structures with Dampers: Seismic and Wind Response Reduction Using Passive Negative Stiffness and Inerter Systems

Satish Nagarajaiah et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the multimode damping effects of dampers enhanced by negative stiffness devices (NSDs) and inerters for high-rise structures and large-span bridges. The results show that the NSDs achieve comparable damping enhancement for all modes, while the inerters tend to only affect specific modes and lock the relative motion in higher structural modes.

Summary: This paper deals with the detuning problems of traditional passive tuned mass dampers (TMDs) and proposes a novel TMD-NSD assembly to improve their performance. The study finds that the TMD-NSD is more effective for serviced structures and outperforms the TMD in terms of damping ratio and resistance to dynamic lateral loading.

A nonlinear seismic metamaterial lying on layered soils

Jia Lou et al.

Summary: Seismic metamaterials with nonlinearity have been proposed to protect engineering structures from earthquakes. This study investigates the propagation and dispersion of Rayleigh wave in a nonlinear seismic metamaterial composed of resonators attached on layered soils. Analytical modeling and finite element simulations are employed to analyze the effects of clayey slit and resonator-substrate interaction on the wave propagation. The study shows that the clayey slit reduces the phase velocity of Rayleigh wave, and the interaction with resonators leads to the disappearance of surface wave in a certain frequency band.

Summary: This paper investigates the application of finite locally resonant metafoundations in ultra-low-frequency seismic isolation and develops and optimizes two finite locally resonant multiple degrees of freedom metafoundations. Nonlinear programming is used to optimize the nonlinear behavior of dampers using the Bouc-Wen hysteretic model. The optimized systems are tested against natural seismic records with linear and nonlinear time history analyses as well as spectro-spatial analysis to obtain detailed information on nonlinear wave propagation.

Summary: This paper discusses the multi-hazard vibration reduction of high-rise buildings using supplemental negative stiffness damped outrigger (NSDO) system in resisting earthquakes and winds, emphasizing on the optimization of NSDO system. The study finds that NSDO system amplifies the deformation of viscous dampers at outrigger ends, achieving higher efficiency compared to conventional damped outrigger (CDO) systems, leading to further reduction in seismic harmful drift and cross wind acceleration response.
