Hybrid joining of jacket structures for offshore wind turbines - Validation under static and dynamic loading at medium and large scale

M. Albiez et al.

Summary: The wind energy sector is seeking to improve the efficiency of their offshore facilities through the use of larger structures. This paper presents a novel hybrid joint that combines adhesive bonding with welding to allow for even larger offshore structures. The design and manufacturing concept were simulated numerically, and the solution greatly reduces complex and costly welding operations on the legs of the jacket structure. The hybrid joint offers an alternative to welding on the primary structural elements, resulting in reduced stresses and potential weakening.

Assessment of surface crack growth of composite girders with concrete-filled tubular flanges and corrugated webs through substructure-based numerical modelling

Z. Y. Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents an analytical assessment of the crack growth behavior of composite girders with concrete filled tubular flanges and corrugated webs. It develops a substructure-based numerical model to replicate the distinctive features of crack propagation and discusses the factors influencing stress intensity factors (SIFs). The proposed model is validated through experiments, showing good correlation with the observed crack growth increment and fatigue endurances.

Fracture mechanics investigation of crack coalescence in a steel tubular T-joint specimen

Satoyuki Tanaka et al.

Summary: A fatigue test was conducted on steel tubular T-joint specimens, and the crack size was measured using the beach mark technique. Rare fracture patterns were discovered, including a specimen that generated two major surface cracks that coalesced into a doubly curved surface crack. Crack propagation simulation was performed using the X-FEM option in the open-source software Code_Aster, and FEM CP simulation was conducted to validate the X-FEM results. The CP phenomena were carefully examined using fracture mechanics parameters and crack front trajectories.

A crack propagation simulation for a steel CHS T-joint employing an advanced shell-solid finite element modeling

S. Tanaka et al.

Summary: An efficient crack propagation simulation system based on shell-solid finite element modeling is established for a three-dimensional CP simulation of a curvilinearly propagating surface crack in a steel circular hollow section (CHS) T-joint. Stress intensity factors (SIFs) are computed using the virtual crack closure-integral method (VCCM) with quadratic tetrahedral finite elements to analyze the CP rate and direction of the crack. The effectiveness of the modeling is examined through fatigue testing and simplified CP simulation results, with formulas such as hot spot stress (HSS) and weld toe magnification factor (Mk factor) used for the simplified CP method.

Numerical study on the effect of residual stresses on stress intensity factor and fatigue life for a surface-cracked T-butt welded joint using numerical influence function method

Phyo Myat Kyaw et al.

Summary: Fatigue crack propagation in welded joints is a major concern due to high stress concentration and welding residual stress. This study evaluates fatigue life of welded structures using fracture mechanics approach, predicts WRS using TEP-FEA, evaluates SIFs using IFM, and discusses the effects of WRS. Fatigue life estimations under different loading conditions are calculated and the impact of considering WRS on fatigue life is demonstrated.
