Broadband low-frequency flexural wave attenuation in beam-type metastructures with double-sides inertial amplified resonators

Yinggang Li et al.

Summary: In this study, we present a theoretical investigation on the flexural wave propagation and vibration attenuation characteristics in a Euler-Bernoulli beam-type metastructure with double-sides inertial amplified resonators. The results show that the proposed beam-type metastructures can achieve broadband low-frequency flexural wave attenuation, and the flexural wave band gap can be effectively modulated and optimized by changing the system parameters.

Flexural Wave Propagation in Rigid Elastic Combined Metabeam

Abhigna Bhatt et al.

Summary: This paper studies the flexural wave propagation, attenuation, and reflection through a finite number of rigid elastic combined metabeam (RECM) elements sandwiched between two Euler Bernoulli beams using the spectral element, inverse Fourier transform, and transfer matrix method. The spectral element method is formulated for the unit representative cell of RECM employing rigid body dynamics. The sensitivity analysis reveals the influence of non-dimensional parameters, such as mass ratio, length ratio, and rotary inertia ratio, on the attenuation profile. The rotary inertia of the rigid body produces a local resonance band that can bridge the gap between two Bragg scattering bands, resulting in an ultra-wide stop band for specific non-dimensional parameters.

Non-dimensional analysis of the bandgap formation in a locally resonant metamaterial pipe conveying fluid

R. Fernandes et al.

Summary: The effects of fluid flow velocity on the edge frequencies of the bandgap in an acoustic metamaterial pipe are investigated. Two methodologies are presented to predict the bandgap formation. It is shown that an increase in fluid velocity decreases the bandgap width, while an increase in the mass ratio of the fluid and the resonators to the pipe leads to a slight decrease and increase in the bandgap width, respectively.

Summary: This study proposes an approach to explore the band energy structures of elastic metamaterials using the Hamilton principle, Bloch theorem, and finite-element method. Bandgap merging with double-negative metabeam

Ankur Dwivedi et al.

Summary: In this study, the bandgap formation in an Euler-Bernoulli beam-based metastructure with periodically attached double negative local resonators is theoretically investigated. The introduction of negative stiffness and mass in the attached local resonator enables the design of a double negative metabeam. The complex band structure reveals the existence of multiple locally resonant attenuation bandgaps, and the merging of negative stiffness and mass controlled locally resonant bandgaps significantly increases the attenuation bandwidth.

Impact load mitigation of meta-panels with single local resonator

Nhi H. Vo et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of design parameters on the impact mitigation capacity of a new meta-panel that leveraged the coupled mechanisms of plastic deformation and local resonance to absorb energy from impact loading. The meta-panel shows a substantial reduction in the mid-span deflection and an increase in the impact energy absorption compared to conventional sandwich panels. Furthermore, parametric studies are conducted to investigate the effects of the thickness of the hollow-truss bar, core material properties, and impact velocity on the meta-panels impact-resistant behaviour.

Metamaterial beam with graded local resonators for broadband vibration suppression

Guobiao Hu et al.

Summary: This paper investigates a technique for broadband vibration suppression using a graded metamaterial beam, proposes a design strategy and defines three figures of merit to evaluate its performance. A parametric study reveals the effects of frequency spacing and damping ratio on the vibration suppression performance, and shows that by tuning these parameters, a significant increase in attenuation bandwidth can be achieved.

Flexural waves in graded metabeam lattice

Arnab Banerjee

Summary: This paper investigates the effect of graded variation in separation gap between two successive resonators and their mass on the band structure of a graded metabeam. The arrangement of resonators can alter the band structure, widening the overall attenuation band gap, but deteriorating the attenuation level over a wider frequency range.

A ring vibration isolator enhanced by a nonlinear energy sink

Dong-Dong Tan et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the use of a nonlinear energy sink to reduce vibration in a broad frequency range, aiming to design a lightweight broadband isolator. By establishing a comprehensive model of a ring with the nonlinear energy sink, the study reveals the superiority of the nonlinear energy sink in a ring isolator compared to a conventional linear absorber of the same mass, damping, and stiffness. The effects of mass, nonlinear stiffness, and damping ratio on vibration reduction are examined through mathematical modeling and analysis techniques.

A dual-functional metamaterial for integrated vibration isolation and energy harvesting

Ze-Qi Lu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a dual-functional metamaterial for integrated low-frequency vibration isolation and energy harvesting, achieved by implanting a rolling-ball with coils into a spherical magnetic cavity. Numerical results demonstrate that a cavity mass arrayed beam with a periodic array of nonlinear energy harvesters has more and wider low-frequency band-gaps compared to traditional metamaterials.

Sander Baas et al.

Summary: By transforming a cheap open source 3D printer into a programmable syringe pump set, with only 3 additional parts needed, stable flows can be achieved without prior knowledge in electronics or programming. The total cost is relatively low, and using cheap disposable syringes allows for different flow rates to be achieved.
