Multimodal Carbonates: Distribution of Oil Saturation in the Microporous Regions of Arab Formations

Tadeusz W. Patzek et al.

Summary: This article investigates the microporosity and oil saturation distribution in the Arab D formation in the largest oil field on earth, the Ghawar. The study reveals that a significant portion of the micropores would have been bypassed during primary drainage, unless the invading crude oil had sufficient invasion length. It also shows that under the predominately water-wet conditions in Ghawar, the invaded portions of the micropores are expected to have initial oil saturations of 60-85%. However, due to the asphaltenic nature of the crude oil, these pores would become inaccessible to waterflooding unless further measures are taken to modify the system's surface chemistry or create substantial local pore pressure gradients.

Chemical Compositions in Modified Salinity Waterflooding of Calcium Carbonate Reservoirs: Experiment

M. P. Yutkin et al.

Summary: Modified or low-salinity waterflooding of carbonate oil reservoirs has economic potential, but the reactivity of limestone hinders the design of brines. This study verifies the theoretical framework through waterflood-brine experiments and finds that the injected brine reaches chemical equilibrium even at low injection rates. These findings contribute to the understanding of the impact of brines on the carbonate rock and crude oil interfaces.

Pore-Scale Spontaneous Imbibition at High Advancing Contact Angles in Mixed-Wet Media: Theory and Experiment

Summary: Mixed wettability in oil reservoirs affects oil recovery. Studying the imbibition process in capillaries can increase the oil recovery. Dynamic models fail to explain the experimental results, while the quasi-static model is more accurate.

Construction of Reliable Flow Simulation Domain and Estimation of Permeability Based on Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and 3D X-ray Computed Tomography for Reservoir Carbonate Rocks

Eomzi Yang et al.

Summary: This study proposes the construction of a ternary-phase domain model through the fusion of X-ray CT imaging and nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. The model includes resolved apparent-pore, unresolved gray-pore, and resolved solid voxels. Analysis of X-ray CT images of carbonate rocks from Abu Dhabi reveals that fluid flow can pass through the unresolved gray-pore region. Additionally, a modified hydraulic tortuosity model is proposed to evaluate the tortuosity of the ternary-phase domain.

Characterization of pore and grain size distributions in porous geological samples-An image processing workflow

Hossein Safari et al.

Summary: The proposed image processing workflow efficiently characterizes pore and grain size distributions in porous geological samples using SEM and mu CT images. Results indicate a bias in 2D size distributions acquired from SEM images, which can be corrected using stereological techniques to provide more accurate 3D distributions comparable with mu CT results. Additionally, microstructural details resolved by SEM significantly impact pore and grain size distributions in sandstone and carbonate rock samples, showing bimodal distributions in SEM-resolved microporosities compared to unimodal distributions observed in mu CT images.

Chemical Compositions in Salinity Waterflooding of Carbonate Reservoirs: Theory

M. P. Yutkin et al.

Summary: Higher oil recovery after waterflood in carbonate reservoirs is attributed to increasing water wettability of the rock that relies on complicated surface chemistry. Carefully designed chemical and/or brine flood compositions in the laboratory may not remain intact while passing through the reactive reservoir rock, especially in low-salinity waterflood processes.

MICROPOROSITY QUANTIFICATION USING CONFOCAL MICROSCOPY

Neil F. Hurley et al.

Summary: In carbonate rocks, pore diameters can vary significantly, from submicrometer-scale voids to km-scale caves. This study focuses on micropores with diameters <= 10 micrometers and examines how laser scanning confocal microscopy offers improved resolution and imaging capabilities compared to traditional techniques. This technology allows for the generation of 2D and 3D images of pore bodies and throats, as well as the calculation of pore-body to pore-throat size ratios.

Quality Evaluation of Epoxy Pore Casts Using Silicon Micromodels: Application to Confocal Imaging of Carbonate Samples

Ahmed Hassan et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate and optimize the parameters of epoxy pore casting, such as impregnation pressure, using silicon micromodels as a reference. Possible defects during casting, such as resin shrinkage and gas trapping, were demonstrated. An optimized protocol was developed to produce high-quality resin pore casts for high-resolution 3D imaging and the description of microporosity in micritic carbonates.
