Ductile tearing of aluminium plates: experiments and modelling

Vetle Espeseth et al.

Summary: This paper presents a study on quasi-static ductile tearing of AA6016 thin plates, which changes the fracture mechanism from grain boundary failure to void coalescence based on the temper. The experiments and simulations using the Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman model reveal that accelerated void growth is initiated by material softening or strain localization. A proposed method using a critical porosity surface, f(c) = f(c)(T, L), is able to predict when accelerated void growth starts based on hydrostatic and deviatoric stress states. The simulation results show that the localization model performs well for a wide range of stress states, while the softening model is less versatile.

Simulation of ductile tearing during a full size test using a non local Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model

Youbin Chen et al.

Summary: This study experimentally investigates the ductile tearing behavior of a full size precracked pipe. The pipe material is characterized using smooth and notched tensile bars and precracked C(T) specimens, and a non-local GTN model is used in finite element simulations to successfully represent the early stages of crack propagation in the pipe.

Micromechanics-based modeling of plastic and ductile fracture of aluminum alloy 2024-O

Jinwoo Lee et al.

Summary: In this study, the plastic deformation behavior, ductile damage, and fracture of aluminum alloy 2024-O materials were investigated under quasi-static conditions. Experimental tests were conducted to characterize the plasticity and damage behavior, and finite element simulations were performed to predict the behavior. The results showed that the modified GTN model provided better predictions of the plasticity and ductile damage behavior.

A gradient-enhanced formulation for thermoviscoplastic metals accounting for ductile damage

Joao Paulo Pascon et al.

Summary: In this work, a gradient-enhancement formulation for ductile damage analysis in thermoviscoplastic metals is extended through a nonlocal extension of the thermoviscoplastic Gurson's model. The nonlocal formulation delays the damage evolution and reduces mesh sensitivity, leading to more consistent porosity contours. The choice of the nonlocal parameter is dependent on the strain rate employed.

Aluminium plates with geometrical defects subjected to low-velocity impact: Experiments and simulations

Vetle Espeseth et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental and numerical study on the impact behavior of AA6016 aluminum plates with three different heat treatments in the low-velocity regime. The results show that intact plates in high-strength material are more resilient to low-velocity impact, while plates with pre-cut slits require high ductility. The numerical simulations are able to predict the response and deformation of the intact plates and the crack propagation of the tests, but the force response in dynamic experiments is sometimes underestimated for plates in temper T6 and T7.

A two characteristic length nonlocal GTN model: Application to cup-cone and slant fracture

A. El Ouazani Tuhami et al.

Summary: This study proposes a nonlocal extension of a local ductile damage model, which can predict complex crack paths and solve the problem of strain and damage localization. It is found that the characteristic lengths affect crack formation and size effects, providing possibilities for determining material characteristic lengths using homothetic specimens.

Simulation of crack patterns in quasi-brittle materials under thermal shock using phase field and cohesive zone models

Tao Wang et al.

Summary: This paper establishes a phase field coupled cohesive zone model to simulate the brittle and quasi-brittle fracture processes in three-dimensional solids, especially the complex crack patterns under thermal shock. Several examples are given to illustrate the effectiveness of the model in solving complex fracture problems under thermal shock. Additionally, the formation mechanism of crack patterns in ceramic bottle is discussed, emphasizing the significant role of the difference in thermal expansion coefficients in the formation of crack patterns and crack density.

A non-local plasticity model for porous metals with deformation-induced anisotropy: Mathematical and computational issues

Nikolaos Aravas et al.

Summary: A non-local gradient plasticity model for porous metals accounting for deformation-induced anisotropy is introduced, incorporating the evolution of porosity and anisotropy due to changes in void shape and orientation. The model's mathematical characteristics are analyzed, showing a higher hardening modulus compared to the local model, leading to elliptic behavior and eliminating discontinuous solutions. Numerical integration algorithms, boundary value problem implementation, and analytical methods for eigenvector calculations are discussed, with the non-local model implemented in ABAQUS for various example problems.

Numerical implementation of a non-local GTN model for explicit FE simulation of ductile damage and fracture

Sondre Bergo et al.

Summary: This study presents the numerical implementation and initial applications of a non-local Gurson-Tvergaard-Needleman (GTN) model for explicit finite element analysis, discussing the effect of the material characteristic length on ductile damage and fracture behavior and on the mesh sensitivity of the results. The study shows that simulation results obtained in all stages of the ductile fracture process are mesh independent for a certain mesh size ratio related to the material characteristic length when the non-local integral is evaluated on the current configuration.
