Environmental and economic comparison of semi-rigid and flexible base asphalt pavement during construction period

Rui Zhang et al.

Summary: This study used process life cycle assessment (LCA) and process life cycle cost (LCC) methods to investigate the impacts of design parameters on the environmental and economic performances of asphalt pavement. The results showed that the type of pavement, resilient modulus of subgrade, thickness of adjustable layer, traffic level, and the annual average daily traffic volume of vehicles influenced the energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, construction budget, and environmental and economic costs of asphalt pavement. The study found that the energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of flexible base asphalt pavement were lower than that of semi-rigid base asphalt pavement, but the construction budget and environmental economy cost were higher.

Summary: This study proposed a method to test the mode II fracture behaviors of hot mix asphalt (HMA) and examined the effects of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and rejuvenator on the mode II fracture performance of HMA. Results indicated that with the increase of RAP, the fracture performance of HMA decreased, while the use of rejuvenator benefited the mode II fracture resistance.

Effect of RAP and glass fiber on mode I fracture behaviors of ultra-thin friction course

Weimin Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) and glass fiber on the fracture behaviors of ultra-thin friction course (UTFC) at low and intermediate temperatures. The results showed that the incorporation of RAP weakened the fracture resistance of UTFC at low temperature, while the addition of glass fiber counteracted this adverse effect. UTFC exhibited the best cracking resistance at intermediate temperature, but the incorporation of RAP deteriorated the fracture resistance. The addition of both RAP and glass fiber further deteriorated the fracture performance, possibly due to the non-uniform distribution of fiber.

Summary: The study found that the cohesive strength of asphalt, mastic, and mortar increases with the increase in dynamic viscosity of asphalt. As temperature increases, the failure type of asphalt changes from adhesive to cohesive failure, while the failure types of mastic and mortar change from cohesive to adhesive failure. Under wet conditions, adhesive failure was observed in asphalt, and the failure types of mastic and mortar changed from cohesive to adhesive failure with increasing moisture damage.

Fracture investigation of asphalt mixtures containing reclaimed asphalt pavement using an equivalent energy approach

Weimin Song et al.

Summary: Asphalt concrete exhibits different fracture behaviors at low and intermediate temperatures, with stress intensity factor (K-IC) and energy release rate (J-integral) commonly used to evaluate fracture performance. This study introduced an equivalent stress intensity factor (K*(IC)) to assess the fracture toughness of asphalt concrete at a wider temperature range. Test results indicate that the addition of reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP) enhances fracture performance at intermediate temperatures. Furthermore, the use of a rejuvenator was found to be effective in improving fracture resistance at both low and intermediate temperatures.
