Numerical Simulation of Rock Thermal Fracture Considering Friction Effect in the Framework of Smooth Particle Hydrodynamics Based on Total Lagrangian Formula

Dianrui Mu et al.

Summary: In this study, a new coupled thermo-mechanical method is proposed to simulate the thermal fracture process of rocks. The method, based on total Lagrangian formula, considers the friction effect and uses virtual bonds to represent the interaction between particles. An efficient and accurate hybrid friction contact algorithm is embedded in the method to simulate the friction behavior between solid particles. The numerical results show that the proposed method is accurate, efficient, and stable.

Extending application of asymmetric semi-circular bend specimen to investigate mixed mode I/II fracture behavior of granite

Qiu-hong Wu et al.

Summary: The present study investigates the fracture toughness determination of rock materials using the asymmetric semi-circular bend (ASCB) specimens. A series of fracture tests were conducted on granite ASCB specimens, analyzing the fracture initiation, crack initiation angle, and crack propagating trajectory through various criteria. The influence of crack length on mode I/II fracture toughness was studied, and the comparison between experimental results and predicted fracture toughness ratios was conducted. The relationship between experimentally determined crack initiation angles and curves of the generalized maximum tangential stress (GMTS) criterion was obtained. The fracture process was recorded using a high-speed camera, and the shortcomings of ASCB specimens for fracture toughness determination of rock materials were discussed. The results provide a reference for analyzing mixed mode I and II fracture behavior of brittle materials.

Mechanical properties and cracking behaviors of limestone-like samples with two parallel fissures before and after grouting

Le Hui-lin et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and crack behavior of limestone-like samples with two parallel open fissures or cement-infilled fissures were found to be influenced by bridge inclination angle and fissure inclination angle. A new phenomenon of tensile crack closure was observed in samples with small fissure inclination angles. Grouting of cement was shown to transfer stress and reduce stress concentration, affecting peak strength, crack initiation stress, and coalescence type between open fissures and cement-infilled fissures.

Numerical Simulation on the Interaction Modes Between Hydraulic and Natural Fractures Based on a New SPH Method

Summary: The study found that under low vertical confining pressure and low injecting rate conditions, NF initiates at one tip closer to the horizontal boundary; under high vertical confining pressure, high injecting rate, and small inclination angle conditions, branching phenomenon occurs. Confining pressure, inclination angle, and injecting rate all have significant impacts on characteristic loads.
