Development of maximum tangential strain (MTSN) criterion for prediction of mixed-mode I/III brittle fracture

Jamal Bidadi et al.

Summary: In this research, a new form of maximum tangential strain criterion called 3D-MTSN is developed for predicting mixed-mode I/III fracture phenomenon. The influence of T-stress and Poisson's ratio on fracture behavior is considered. The results show that both sign and magnitude of T-stress can affect the fracture behavior of mixed mode I/III, and Poisson's ratio has a noticeable influence on the fracture envelopes.

Experimental and theoretical investigation of mixed-mode I/II and I/III fracture behavior of PUR foams using a novel strain-based criterion

B. Shahbazian et al.

Summary: This study experimentally and theoretically investigates the brittle fracture of Polyurethane (PUR) foam under mixed-mode I/II and I/III loading conditions. The results show that the ECD-SN criterion, which considers an effective critical distance, provides a better prediction for the fracture behavior of PUR foam compared to other criteria.

An extended maximum tangential strain energy density criterion considering T-stress for combined mode I-III brittle fracture

Wen Hua et al.

Summary: This study modified the MTSED criterion to consider stress intensity factors and T-stress for combined mode I-III brittle fracture. The influence of Poisson's ratio and T-stress on fracture characteristics of cracked components was discussed, showing significant effects on fracture resistance ratios, especially for pure mode III. Positive T-stress increases fracture resistance ratio while negative T-stress has the opposite effect. Predicted values by the extended MTSED criterion agree well with testing data, particularly for pure mode III cases.

On the comparison of two mixed-mode I plus III fracture test specimens

A. Bahmani et al.

Summary: This study compared two test specimens, ENDB and ENDC, for measuring mixed-mode I+III fracture toughness. The loading type significantly affected the fracture parameters, with ENDC exhibiting more stable mixed-mode fracture but sensitivity to crack inclination angle rotation. The optimal crack length for measuring mixed-mode I+III fracture toughness was found in the ENDB specimen, while pure mode III fracture toughness was greater in the ENDC specimen. Various parameters, including T-stress, influenced the differences in fracture toughness values measured via both specimens.

Analysis of Mixed-Mode I/II/III Fracture Toughness Based on a Three-Point Bending Sandstone Specimen with an Inclined Crack

Xin Pan et al.

Summary: This study investigated the coupling effect of multiple variables on fracture parameters and proposed a three-point bending specimen with an inclined crack for mixed-mode fracture research. The fracture parameters were obtained through experiments and finite element analysis, showing that the generalized maximum tangential strain energy density factor criterion considering T-stress can better predict the mixed-mode fracture toughness.

Summary: The concept of effective critical distances is introduced to construct a novel mixed-mode I/II/III brittle fracture criterion (ECD-SN criterion), which shows superior estimates compared to traditional criteria when predicting experimental data for mixed-mode fracture toughness and fracture angles.
