Functional unit choice in space conditioning life cycle assessment: Review and recommendations

Maggie DeMarco et al.

Summary: The increasing use of space cooling through air conditioners and electric fans, coupled with the potential for creating a positive feedback loop for climate change, highlights the need for standardized life cycle assessments of space conditioning systems. A lack of consensus on functional unit definitions in existing studies complicates the comparison of environmental impacts and hinders decision-making towards increased sustainability in space conditioning. Establishing a standard functional unit, such as 1 MJ of heat added to or removed from conditioned space, is recommended to ensure future studies are comparable.

On-site performance investigation of a desiccant wheel deep- dehumidification system applied in lithium battery manufacturing plant

Bowen Guan et al.

Summary: This study reveals the on-site performance of a desiccant wheel deep-dehumidification system in a lithium battery manufacturing plant, indicating that the electric heater is the only viable heating source type for regeneration and the dehumidification cost of the desiccant wheel is significantly higher than that of the cooler, which limits the system performance. Additionally, a refined system is proposed to improve the system energy performance, with simulation results showing potential electricity savings during the cooling season.
