Elucidating non-uniform assembling effect in large-scale PEM fuel cell by coupling mechanics and performance models

Wenming Huo et al.

Summary: The assembly of proton exchange membrane (PEM) fuel cell has a significant influence on contact pressure of BP and GDL, which affects key parameters of GDL including contact resistance, porosity, and permeability. A large-scale finite element method (FEM) PEM fuel cell model is developed considering realistic assembly, which is assembled by 14 bolts. The contact pressure at the interface of GDL and BP is converted into non-uniform contact resistance incorporated into a self-developed 3D + 1D full PEM fuel cell multi-phase model with the active area of 108 cm2.

Dynamic response during mode switching of unitized regenerative fuel cells with orientational flow channels

Hang Guo et al.

Summary: The oxygen side flow channel structures have a significant influence on the dynamic response of relevant parameters during the operation mode switching procedures of a unitized regenerative fuel cell. The study compared the influence of eight oxygen-side channels on the mode switching process and found that the required time for parameters to reach a stable state in the fuel cell mode is longer when using orientational flow channels. Additionally, different flow channel structures affect the time required to stabilize each parameter during mode switching, but do not change the characteristics of the stable state mode.

Pore-scale study of effects of relative humidity on reactive transport processes in catalyst layers in PEMFC

Ruiyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: A pore-scale model is developed to investigate the effects of relative humidity (RH) on the proton exchange membrane fuel cell (PEMFC) catalyst layer (CL). The study shows that an increase in RH can enhance the reactive surface area of the CL by considering the liquid water distribution of capillary condensation and ultra-thin liquid film. The results also indicate that the effects of RH on the CL are more pronounced under low Pt loading and with high surface area carbon particles. Furthermore, the local transport processes in the CL can be optimized for better cell performance by considering the coupled effects of RH and CL porous structures.

Optimization of gas diffusion layer in high temperature PEMFC with the focuses on thickness and porosity

Lingchao Xia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of gas diffusion layer (GDL) thickness and porosity on flow uniformity, diffusion flux, and ohmic resistance in a high temperature proton exchange membrane fuel cell (HT-PEMFC) using a numerical non-isothermal 3D model. The research reveals that increasing GDL thickness and porosity leads to higher flow uniformity and ohmic resistance, but the influence on diffusion flux is opposite. The optimal GDL thickness and porosity are identified for improved performance in the fuel cell system.

Summary: The performance of proton-exchange membrane fuel cells is closely related to the transport properties of gas and charge carriers in the cathode catalyst layer. Selecting a suitable ionomer/carbon ratio can enhance the fuel cell performance, with increasing ionomer content decreasing proton resistance and increasing electron resistance. At an ionomer/carbon ratio of 0.6, the fuel cell exhibited the highest power density due to low oxygen transport and proton resistance.
