High-throughput 96-well bioelectrochemical platform for screening of electroactive microbial consortia

L. Szydlowski et al.

Summary: The study compared the electroactive capabilities of microbial communities from four mine drainages using a newly designed 96-well-plate array of microbial fuel cells. It demonstrated that the 96-well MFC array is a suitable platform for high-throughput screening, selection, and enrichment of electroactive consortia. Environmental conditions and physical and chemical parameters were found to be crucial for developing an efficient electroactive community.

Prevention and removal of membrane and separator biofouling in bioelectrochemical systems: a comprehensive review

Grzegorz Pasternak et al.

Summary: Bioelectrochemical systems (BESs) have made significant progress in recent years, with membranes or separators being critical components affecting performance. However, biofilm formation on the membrane can negatively impact performance. Various strategies such as surface modification and cleaning techniques have been successful in combating biofilm formation and improving long-term power performance.

Recycled waste polypropylene composite ceramic membranes for extended lifetime of microbial fuel cells

Grzegorz Pasternak et al.

Summary: The study introduces a new approach for enhancing the lifetime and power output of ceramic microbial fuel cells by utilizing recycled polypropylene nonwoven fabric, demonstrating the strong antifouling effects of ceramic modification. This method successfully increases the long-term efficiency of ceramic MFCs through recycling polypropylene, which is one of the least recycled plastics globally.
