Developing mathematical modeling of the heat and mass transfer in a planar micro-combustor with detailed reaction mechanisms

Mostafa Pourali et al.

Summary: This study presents an analytical investigation of heat and mass transfer in a planar micro-combustor considering detailed reaction mechanisms for a methane/air mixture. By dividing the reactive mixture into different zones and solving the partial differential equations of energy and species in each zone, proper correlations for wall temperature distribution under different conditions were proposed. Additionally, appropriate non-dimensional physical parameters were introduced for a general investigation, showing the impact of changing flow Peclet number and solid-fluid thermal diffusion ratio on gas temperature and CO conversion rate.

Non-premixed combustion characteristics and thermal performance of a catalytic combustor for micro-thermophotovoltaic systems

Linhong Li et al.

Summary: The study verified that a symmetrical configuration of micro-combustor can improve combustion efficiency and radiation efficiency, allowing it to operate at higher average velocities. Furthermore, as the average velocity increases, combustion efficiency decreases monotonically while radiation efficiency and radiant energy output increase first and then decrease.

Effect of Different Technologies on Performance Enhancement of the Micro-Combustor for the Micro Thermophotovoltaic Application: A Review

Dongli Tan et al.

Summary: With the advancement of micro-mechanical manufacturing technology, a variety of micro-electromechanical systems have been produced in recent years. These systems are traditionally powered by energy systems with drawbacks, so research is being done to develop micro-energy dynamical systems with small size, light gravity, high density, and long duration for continuous and reliable power supply.

A numerical study on the blow-off limit of premixed hydrogen/air flames in a cylindrical micro-combustor

Saeed Naeemi et al.

Summary: The study numerically investigated the critical blow-off velocity of premixed H2-air combustion in a micro-cylindrical combustor, showing the effects of equivalence ratio, wall thickness, combustor geometry, and thermal properties of walls. Increasing equivalence ratio leads to higher critical blow-off velocity, while thicker walls improve flame stability. Varying thermal conductivity and convection/emissivity coefficients of walls also impact the critical blow-off velocity in micro-combustor design and operation.

A novel Swiss-roll micro-combustor with double combustion chambers: A numerical investigation on effect of solid material on premixed CH4/air flame blow-off limit

Lun Ma et al.

Summary: A novel Swiss-roll micro-combustor with double combustion chambers is proposed to improve flame stability and extend blow-off limits. Different solid materials (SiC, stainless steel, and copper) have a significant impact on flame stability and blow-off limits in micro-combustors. Good heat recirculation and low heat loss rates play a crucial role in influencing blow-off limits in micro-combustors.

Effect of Oxygen Concentration on the Oxidative Thermodynamics and Spontaneous Combustion of Pulverized Coal

Lifeng Ren et al.

Summary: Spontaneous combustion of pulverized coal has been extensively researched using differential scanning calorimetry to investigate exothermic characteristics and combustion risk. Results showed that reducing oxygen concentrations decreases exothermic intensity and increases ignition temperatures. Additionally, lowering oxygen levels effectively reduces both apparent activation energy and spontaneous combustion risk indexes of the coal samples.

Cost of long-distance energy transmission by different carriers

Daniel DeSantis et al.

Summary: This paper compares the relative cost of long-distance, large-scale energy transmission by electricity, gaseous, and liquid carriers. The higher cost of electrical transmission is primarily due to lower carrying capacity of electrical transmission lines compared to pipelines for gaseous and liquid fuels. The differences in transmission cost are important but often unrecognized, and should be considered in analysis of various renewable energy production, distribution, and utilization scenarios.

Catalytic methane combustion in plate-type microreactors with different channel configurations: An experimental study

Li He et al.

Summary: This paper presents an experimental study on the catalytic methane combustion (CMC) in plate-type microreactors with wall-coated Pt/gamma-Al2O3 catalyst. The study found that a specific catalyst loading of 57.6 g m(-2) yielded the highest methane conversion, and the double serpentine microchannel geometry showed the highest methane conversion due to control over residence time and catalyst coating surface area.
