Environmental economic co-benefits and offsets effects of China's unified energy-carbon market

Zhongwen Xu et al.

Summary: China's efforts to unify the markets for natural resources and emissions have had a significant impact on the functioning of these markets, with initial allocation mechanisms playing a crucial role. To understand how the market functions, this paper establishes an integrated framework that includes permit initialization and reallocation processes. Through scenario analysis and machine learning methods, variables are simulated for the year 2030. The results show that a unified energy-carbon market in China could lead to a GDP increase of more than 49%, along with higher energy consumption and carbon emissions. However, provinces in China experience improved energy consumption and carbon emission intensities, indicating the effectiveness and importance of the unified market. Two rebound effects are identified, highlighting the need for an efficient incentive mechanism and effective government intervention.

Embodied energy and carbon emissions of building materials in China

Wanlin Chen et al.

Summary: The increasing construction volume has led to a rise in carbon emissions, making energy conservation and carbon reduction in the building industry crucial. The study found that cement, steel, and brick account for a significant portion of the total energy and carbon emissions of building materials in China, and there are regional disparities in energy and carbon embodied in building materials.

Synergistic effect of carbon ETS and carbon tax under China's peak emission target: A dynamic CGE analysis

Yongqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: This study examines the impact of different carbon emission reduction policies on achieving carbon emissions peak by using a dynamic computable general equilibrium model. The results show that a hybrid system of carbon tax and carbon ETS can help achieve the peak at a lower economic cost and promote optimization of energy consumption structures.

A computable general equilibrium (CGE) assessment of technological progress and carbon pricing in India's green energy transition via furthering its renewable capacity

Basanta K. Pradhan et al.

Summary: This paper uses a Computable General Equilibrium (CGE) model to assess the effect of coal cess and technological progress on achieving a target of 40% electric power generation from non-fossil fuel based energy resources by 2030 in India. The study finds that endogenous technological change in renewables, along with the coal cess, can help achieve the low carbon target and bring economic gains. The coal cess can facilitate the shift towards a low carbon economy by reducing the relative prices of non-fossil fuel energy and providing finance for R&D in renewables. Advancements in carbon capture and storage (CCS) technology can also contribute to emission reduction at a lower economic cost. Thus, policy focus on R&D in energy technologies and carbon pricing is crucial for India's low carbon growth.

Summary: This study analyzes the impact of CCS cost reduction on its economic feasibility by incorporating technology learning into a hybrid energy system model. The findings suggest that CCS may be economically feasible in the long term and that cost reduction can mitigate additional costs and labor demand in the steel industry, as well as reduce production loss resulting from CCS adoption.
