Co, Fe and N co-doped 1D assembly of hollow carbon nanoboxes for high-performance supercapacitors

Minjun Kim et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel necklace-like Co, Fe, and N co-doped one-dimensional assembly of hollow carbon nanoboxes (1D-HCNB-x) was successfully synthesized and demonstrated for potential supercapacitor applications. The unique hybrid nanoarchitecture of 1D-HCNB-x, consisting of hollow zero-dimensional carbons arrayed along a one-dimensional carbon nanofiber, offers improved rate capability and high axial electron conductivity. The inclusion of Fe, Co, and N dopants in the carbon matrix also contributes to pseudocapacitance, enhancing specific capacitance.

Minjun Kim et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the significance of strategic nanoarchitecture design in achieving advanced catalyst (or electrode) materials for the oxygen reduction reaction (ORR). The results show that different porosity structures have a marked impact on the electrochemical properties, with mesopores significantly improving wettability and accessibility, and macropores contributing to rate capability. The study also highlights the advantages of a double-shelled nanoarchitecture in increasing electron transfer for ORR.
