Fabrication of a Hydrophobic Hierarchical Surface on Shale Using Modified Nano-SiO2 for Strengthening the Wellbore Wall in Drilling Engineering

Xianbin Huang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a hydrophobic nano-silica for strengthening the wellbore wall when using a water-based drilling fluid. The wellbore-strengthening performance and mechanism were studied through a series of experiments and characterization analysis. The experimental results showed that the hydrophobic nano-silica exhibited good performance in inhibiting shale swelling and dispersion, improving wellbore stability, and outperforming commonly used shale inhibitors. The wellbore-strengthening effect can be attributed to mechanisms such as charge balance, surface structure modification, and pore plugging.

Surface morphology effects on clathrate hydrate wettability

Anh Phan et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of wetting properties in the formation, growth, and agglomeration of clathrate hydrates, and proposes that changes in surface morphology are responsible for the variation in reported contact angles. Due to experimental limitations, the authors employ molecular dynamics simulations to validate their hypothesis and achieve agreement with experimental observations. The author's research helps interpret adhesion force measurements and provides a microscopic tool for understanding the agglomeration of hydrate particles.

Effects of surface property of mixed clays on methane hydrate formation in nanopores: A molecular dynamics study

Fengyi Mi et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of mixed clay surfaces on CH4 hydrate formation using molecular dynamics simulations. The results show that the surfaces of mixed clays adsorb CH4, H2O, and ions, thereby changing their concentrations in the nanopores and affecting hydrate formation. Different affinities for adsorption are observed for surfaces of montmorillonite, illite, and different components of kaolinite, leading to variations in CH4 and ion concentrations and influencing hydrate growth.

Kinetic process of upward gas hydrate growth and water migration on the solid surface

Huiyong Liang et al.

Summary: This study used in situ high-resolution X-ray computed tomography measurements to explore the mechanisms of hydrate growth in the presence of surfactants. It was found that the presence of hydrate crystals triggered enhanced growth on the reactor wall. A time delay was observed before the bulk water reservoir transformed into hydrate. The lower interfacial tension between the hydrate surface and the solution facilitated its adsorption onto the reactor wall. These fundamental results are valuable for understanding the mechanism of hydrate growth in the presence of surfactants and its potential applications.

Insight on the stability of polycrystalline natural gas hydrates by molecular dynamics simulations

Zhengcai Zhang et al.

Summary: Gas hydrates, both in natural and synthesized forms, exhibit complex grain boundary structures which play a significant role in the dissociation process. The thermal stability of polycrystalline hydrates at grain boundaries is influenced by the guest types and grain boundary structures, with CH4 hydrates dissociating only above bulk melting temperature and CO2 hydrates decomposing differently. Additionally, CO2 molecules can accelerate the dissociation process by inducing gas bubble formation and preferential localization within bubbles, with dissociation initiating from the decomposition of specific cage structures.

Anti-agglomeration evaluation and Raman spectroscopic analysis on mixed biosurfactants for preventing CH4 hydrate blockage in n-octane plus water systems

Lingli Shi et al.

Summary: The mixed biosurfactants showed excellent anti-agglomeration effect by greatly reducing the force needed for system flow and decreasing the dosage needed for anti-agglomeration through synergistic effect. Additionally, they could accelerate gas dissolution process without significantly altering hydrate growth rate, contributing to preventing hydrate blockage in oil and gas system.

Summary: This study shows that different types of anti-agglomerants have different effects on methane hydrate dissociation, and water cut and anti-agglomerant dosage also affect dissociation. The increase of water cut significantly increases the maximum dissociation rate.
