Dual function materials (Ru+Na2O/Al2O3) for direct air capture of CO2 and in situ catalytic methanation: The impact of realistic ambient conditions

Chae Jeong-Potter et al.

Summary: This study investigates a dual function material (DFM) consisting of 1% Ru, 10% Na2O/gamma -Al(2)O(3) for combined direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 and catalytic methanation. The DFM exhibits high CO2 adsorption capacity and rates at ambient conditions and can be successfully converted to renewable natural gas through catalytic methanation. The study also explores adsorption under humid conditions and highlights the importance of flowrate in future reactor design.

Aging study of low Ru loading dual function materials (DFM) for combined power plant effluent CO2 capture and methanation

Chae Jeong-Potter et al.

Summary: This study investigates the stability of different Ru-based dual function materials during CO2 capture and catalytic methanation. It is found that the Ru component of DFM deactivates under high levels of O-2 and steam exposure, resulting in lower methanating ability.

Summary: Catalytic CO2 sorbents play a crucial role in CO2 capture and utilization. This study investigates the performance differences between a CO2 methanation catalyst and a catalytic sorbent, showing that the latter may have an additional kinetically relevant irreversible step in the CO2 conversion process.

Feasibility Study of Combining Direct Air Capture of CO2 and Methanation at Isothermal Conditions with Dual Function Materials

Chae Jeong-Potter et al.

Summary: The use of dual function materials (DFM) for combined direct air capture (DAC) of CO2 followed by methanation has been proven feasible. The DFM allows for capture and conversion of CO2 to occur using a single material and reactor at one temperature, maintaining high CO2 capture capacity and producing methane through multiple cycles. Additionally, cyclic operation with the DFM is possible in the presence of moisture, indicating further potential for use in DAC scenarios.

Closing the Carbon Cycle with Dual Function Materials

Loukia-Pantzechroula Merkouri et al.

Summary: Carbon dioxide (CO2) is a harmful greenhouse gas contributing to climate change, and efforts to mitigate emissions include carbon capture and utilization (CCU) where CO2 is used as a building block for chemicals synthesis. Dual function materials (DFMs) can capture and convert CO2 to fuels and chemicals, showing potential in a low-carbon circular economy.

Storage Material Effects on the Performance of Ru-Based CO2 Capture and Methanation Dual Functioning Materials

Alessandro Porta et al.

Summary: The study found that combining alkaline and alkaline-earth metal oxides with Ru on an Al2O3 support is effective for capturing and methanating CO2. Ca, Ba, and K as storage materials (SMs) show higher adsorption capacities and CH4 production at lower temperatures. Resilient carbonates are present on Ca- and Ba-based DFMs surfaces after the hydrogenation step.

Alternate cycles of CO2 storage and in situ hydrogenation to CH4 on Ni-Na2CO3/Al2O3: influence of promoter addition and calcination temperature

Alejandro Bermejo-Lopez et al.

Summary: The study explores the use of dual function materials for alternating cycles of CO2 adsorption and in situ hydrogenation to CH4, eliminating the need for an intermediate CO2 purification step. The addition of promoters generally increases catalytic activity, while higher calcination temperatures reduce metal dispersion and affect the properties of metal species.
