Spontaneous imbibition dynamics in two-dimensional porous media: A generalized interacting multi-capillary model

Shabina Ashraf et al.

Summary: This study proposes a model based on interacting capillaries to predict the spontaneous imbibition in quasi-two-dimensional porous media. The breakthrough time, wetting fluid saturation, and leading meniscus are determined by the capillaries' radii distribution and spatial arrangement. The model provides accurate predictions for the position in time of the saturating front and the leading visible front.

Prediction of gas-water relative permeability in tight rock from movable fluid distribution with nuclear magnetic resonance

Fuyong Wang et al.

Summary: Measuring the relative permeability in tight rock is challenging due to its ultralow permeability and time-consuming experiments. This study used nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) to investigate the distribution of movable and unmovable water in tight sandstone. Based on the movable fluid distribution, a new method for predicting gas-water relative permeability in tight rock was established. The results showed that the distribution of fluids was influenced by the tight rock's pore size and structure. The proposed mathematical model for predicting gas-water relative permeability was verified by comparing with experimental data.

Experimental study of surfactant-enhanced spontaneous imbibition in fractured tight sandstone reservoirs: The effect of fracture distribution

Kun Yang et al.

Summary: Based on high-pressure mercury injection and nuclear magnetic resonance experiments, this study describes the pore distribution of tight sandstone. The influence of fractures, core porosity and permeability, and surfactants on the spontaneous imbibition of tight sandstone is investigated. The findings show that fractures can effectively reduce oil drop adsorption on the core surface, increasing the imbibition recovery rate. Enhanced pore connectivity, higher core porosity and permeability, and the use of surfactants contribute to improved imbibition recovery of tight oil reservoirs.

Influence of sequential changes in the crude oil-water interfacial tension on spontaneous imbibition in oil-wet sandstone

Anupong Sukee et al.

Summary: The interfacial tension between crude oil and water in petroleum reservoirs can be altered by surfactant injection or retention, impacting oil displacement in spontaneous imbibition. Under strong oil-wet conditions, gradually decreasing interfacial tension weakens capillary forces, leading to continuous oil production; in contrast, gradually increasing interfacial tension produces a large amount of oil immediately, but does not promote further displacement. The study suggests that reducing interfacial tension sequentially yields higher oil recovery in imbibition, resembling secondary oil production from surfactant injection post-water flooding, while increasing interfacial tension from surfactant retention results in lesser oil production.

The pore-scale mechanisms of surfactant-assisted spontaneous and forced imbibition in water-wet tight oil reservoirs

Bao Cao et al.

Summary: The imbibition of water with surfactants is important for enhanced oil recovery in tight sandstone reservoirs. This study investigated the migration behaviors of water and oil in different-sized pores, as well as the mechanisms of spontaneous and forced imbibition with different surfactants. It was found that surfactants increased oil recovery, especially in mesopores and macropores. However, low-IFT surfactants reduced oil recovery in micropores. Forced imbibition enhanced water imbibition into micropores but prevented oil extraction from mesopores and macropores.

Enhanced oil recovery by low-salinity water spontaneous imbibition (LSW-SI) in a typical tight sandstone formation of mahu sag from core scale to field scale

Bing Wei et al.

Summary: Accelerating mass exchange between matrix and fractures is crucial for enhanced oil recovery in tight formations. Low salinity water injection has been successful in conventional reservoirs, but its impact in tight formations is still not well understood. Experimental results showed that adjusting brine salinity can significantly improve oil recovery in tight rocks, with 0.21% TDS brine leading to a 4.5% increase in oil production. Core-scale modeling and micro-seismic data were utilized to demonstrate the effectiveness of LSW huff-n-puff for stimulating oil production and enhancing mass exchange efficiency in tight formations, although the benefits did not match those of CO2 and surfactant-assisted methods.

Mathematical model of the spontaneous imbibition of water into oil-saturated fractured porous media with gravity

Hui Cheng et al.

Summary: This study proposed the implicit analytical solution of spontaneous water imbibition into a single oil-saturated fracture for the first time, showing that the difference in imbibition velocity with and without gravity increases with the increase in fracture aperture, and there is a critical fracture length for spontaneous imbibition in the single oil-saturated fracture.

Mathematical modeling of gravity and buoyancy effect on low interfacial tension spontaneous imbibition in tight oil reservoirs

Fuyong Wang et al.

Summary: A new mathematical model considering gravity and buoyancy effects during oil imbibition process is established, showing that oil buoyancy can accelerate the imbibition rate. The differences in imbibition rates with and without gravity and buoyancy become more significant with increasing core permeability and decreasing IFT. In low-IFT solutions, the critical inverse Bond number for considering gravity and buoyancy is approximately 1 x 10(-2).

Research on Characterization and Heterogeneity of Microscopic Pore Throat Structures in Tight Oil Reservoirs

Xinli Zhao et al.

Summary: The key to efficient development of tight reservoir lies in accurate evaluation. This study analyzed the pore throat structure characteristics of sandstone samples using high-pressure mercury injection technology, dividing the samples into three types based on capillary pressure curve characteristics. High-resolution imaging and scanning electron microscopy revealed an increasing level of pore disconnection and poor reservoir performance as reservoir permeability declines. Fractal theory was used to calculate fractal dimensions of reservoirs, showing a gradual increase in fractal dimensions with decrease in reservoir quality.
