Ilmenite: A promising oxygen carrier for the scale-up of chemical looping

Pietro Bartocci et al.

Summary: To address the scale-up challenges of Chemical Looping Processes, the development of efficient and affordable oxygen carriers is crucial. Ilmenite, an ore-derived oxygen carrier, has been identified as an abundant and low-cost option. This paper provides insights into its preparation, reactivity, and performance compared to other carriers, along with its thermodynamic properties and kinetics. The paper also explores its compatibility with various fuels (solid, liquid, gaseous, including biofuels) and discusses important considerations such as cost, environmental sustainability, oxygen transport capacity, as well as issues related to fluidized bed reactors, such as agglomeration and attrition behavior. Furthermore, the paper investigates the interaction between ilmenite and fuels, including the impact of impurities and coke deposition on the gasification rate of solid fuels.

Ilmenite as alternative bed material for the combustion of coal and biomass blends in a fluidised bed combustor to improve combustion performance and reduce agglomeration tendency

Eduardo Garcia et al.

Summary: The study found that using ilmenite as the bed material can reduce CO emissions, decrease efficiency loss, but increase NOx emissions. Ilmenite can also reduce the size of agglomerates and decrease the tendency towards defluidisation.

Fate of trace elements in Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion (OCAC) of municipal solid waste

Ivana Stanicic et al.

Summary: Oxygen Carrier Aided Combustion (OCAC) is a novel approach for burning waste in a fluidized bed. This study analyzed solid samples from an industrial OCAC application using municipal solid waste and ilmenite as the oxygen carrier. The presence of oxygen carriers was found to influence the ash chemistry and the distribution of elements throughout the particle cross-section. The results provide valuable insights into the solid-state chemistry and fate of important elements.

Thermodynamic Analysis on the Fate of Ash Elements in Chemical Looping Combustion of Solid Fuels-Iron-Based Oxygen Carriers

Ivana Stanicic et al.

Summary: Chemical looping combustion (CLC) enables efficient combustion of hydrocarbon fuels while producing a gas stream with high CO2 concentrations. This paper investigates the fate of ash elements in a system using iron-based oxygen carriers and provides a comprehensive comparison with previous experimental data. The study finds that the choice of oxygen carriers significantly influences the behavior of ash elements.

Exceeding 1.5°C global warming could trigger multiple climate tipping points

David I. Armstrong Mckay et al.

Summary: This study provides a revised shortlist of global core tipping elements and regional impact tipping elements and their temperature thresholds through synthesizing paleoclimate, observational, and model-based research. The current global warming is already approaching the lower end of some tipping point uncertainty ranges, and several tipping points may be triggered within the range of global warming set by the Paris Agreement. Therefore, urgent action is needed to mitigate climate change and develop improved tipping point risk assessment, early warning capability, and adaptation strategies.

Oxygen carrier aided combustion (OCAC) of two waste fuels - Experimental and theoretical study of the interaction between ilmenite and zinc, copper and lead

Ivana Stanicic et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fate of zinc, copper, and lead in waste fuels during combustion utilizing oxygen carrier aided combustion technology. It was found that iron on the surface of the oxygen carrier interacts with copper and zinc to form corresponding compounds, while lead is more likely to end up in the fly ash as PbCl2. Thermodynamic calculations were consistent with the identified compounds.
