Condensation heat transfer and pressure drop correlations in plate heat exchangers for heat pump and organic Rankine cycle systems

Ji Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, tailored prediction methods for flow condensation in plate heat exchangers were developed for the applications in heat pump and organic Rankine cycle systems. A comprehensive experimental investigation was conducted, including 283 data points for pressure drop and heat transfer. New correlations utilizing two dimensionless numbers achieved an improved prediction with mean absolute percentage deviation of 8.9% for heat transfer and 10.3% for pressure drop data.

Assumption-free modeling of a micro-scale organic Rankine cycle system based on a mass-sensitive method

Ramin Moradi et al.

Summary: The study models the main components of a non-regenerative, micro-scale ORC unit using experimental results and develops a system solver based on an assumption-free approach to predict system performance at off-design conditions. By considering both energy and mass conservation, the study maps the ORC system's performance within the experimental data range, showing optimal net electric performance at specific pump and expander speeds. The developed model allows a comprehensive understanding of system limitations and losses in waste heat recovery applications without making artificial assumptions.

Summary: CO2 has gained popularity as a refrigerant due to its low global warming potential, non-toxicity, non-flammability, and low cost. However, it requires more compressor power under moderate and high-ambient conditions, necessitating cycle modifications to achieve comparable coefficient of performance values.

Experimental modeling of a lubricated, open drive scroll expander for micro-scale organic Rankine cycle systems

Ramin Moradi et al.

Summary: Scroll compressors converted into expanders are a good choice in micro-to-small-scale organic Rankine cycle (ORC) applications. Several studies have tested and modeled scroll expanders in ORC systems to assess their performance and reliability in off-design conditions. The experimental data are used to modify the available semi-empirical model in the literature, resulting in good accuracy in predicting the expander's overall performance in different operating conditions.

Experimental analysis of high temperature flow boiling heat transfer and pressure drop in a plate heat exchanger

Ji Zhang et al.

Summary: This study experimentally analyzed the heat transfer and pressure drop characteristics in plate heat exchangers at high temperature flow boiling, identifying different heat transfer mechanisms for various working fluids. Propane and isobutane exhibited higher heat transfer coefficients, while R236fa had the lowest. Frictional pressure drops increased with vapor quality and mass flux, and decreased with saturation temperature, with prediction methods developed for heat transfer and pressure drop data.

Systematic Comparison of ORC and s-CO2 Combined Heat and Power Plants for Energy Harvesting in Industrial Gas Turbines

Maria Alessandra Ancona et al.

Summary: This paper presents a detailed comparison of the potential of ORC and s-CO2 as bottomers for industrial gas turbines in a Combined Heat and Power (CHP) configuration. Results show that the s-CO2 may be more appropriate for CHP applications due to higher electric and thermal efficiency, but the total plant investment cost is higher compared to ORC. The feasibility of the investment also depends on the prospective carbon tax application.

Design and loss analysis of radial turbines for supercritical CO2 Brayton cycles

Antti Uusitalo et al.

Summary: The study investigates the effect of design power scale and specific speed on supercritical CO2 operated radial inflow turbines within the power range of 0.1 MW-3.5 MW. It shows that the SCO2 radial turbines can be designed for high efficiency, but with small dimensions and significantly high rotational speeds. Specific speed and mass flow rate have a significant impact on both the geometry and turbine loss distribution.
