Data generative machine learning model for the assessment of outdoor thermal and wind comfort in a northern urban environment

Nasim Eslamirad et al.

Summary: This paper presents a data-driven approach using machine learning to assess outdoor thermal comfort in cities. The approach utilizes computational fluid dynamics simulation results to build a predictive and data-generative model. The results show that this approach can generate reliable data on outdoor comfort for urban stakeholders and researchers.

Effects of urban heat island mitigation strategies in an urban square: A numerical modelling and experimental investigation

Gabriele Battista et al.

Summary: It is recognized that both urbanization and climate change contribute to the emergence of urban heat islands (UHI). UHI has sharply increased due to shifting land use patterns, escalating urbanization, and declining plant and water supplies. The scientific community has paid attention to UHI mitigation techniques, including green roofs, cool materials, vegetation, and water supplies. In this study, a square in Rome was investigated to assess remedies for reducing outdoor air temperatures. The findings show that changing pavement albedo and adding more vegetation enhance the thermal conditions, with grass pavers providing the biggest advantages.

Evaluating mitigation strategies for urban heat island in Mandaue City using ENVI-met

Aiza Cortes et al.

Summary: This study aimed to improve the urban heat island phenomenon in Mandaue by implementing mitigations such as increasing vegetation and green roofs. The simulation results showed that these measures could reduce air and surface temperatures, but the thermal comfort index would still be higher than the comfort temperature.

The effectiveness of cool and green roofs in mitigating urban heat island and improving human thermal comfort

Xun Wang et al.

Summary: Compared to rural areas, urban residents suffer more from heat stress due to the urban heat island effect. This study evaluates the effectiveness of two promising UHI mitigation strategies, cool and green roofs, in improving human thermal comfort during a heatwave in Berlin. The results show that cool roofs outperform green roofs in reducing urban temperatures and both strategies show lower wind speed, lower mean radiant temperature, and higher relative humidity, leading to a city-scale decrease in human thermal comfort.

Impact of urbanization on land surface temperature and surface urban heat Island using optical remote sensing data: A case study of Jeju Island, Republic of Korea

Muhammad Farhan Ul Moazzam et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the land use and cover changes as well as the land surface temperature in Jeju Island using remote sensing data. The findings revealed that urbanization has led to the intensification of urban heat island effect. By measuring the temperature of different land types and correlating it with wind speed, an inverse relationship between surface urban heat island and wind speed was identified. The results of this research can be utilized by policymakers, planners, and climatologists for developing climate-resilient cities.

Can improving the spatial equity of urban green space mitigate the effect of urban heat islands? An empirical study

Chao Xu et al.

Summary: The study finds that increasing the amount of urban green space (UGS) can help reduce the average land surface temperature (LST) in cities, and promoting the spatial equity of UGS distribution can reduce the spatial aggregation of LSTs within urban areas, thereby improving the urban thermal environment.

Analyzing the Impact of Urban Planning and Building Typologies in Urban Heat Island Mitigation

Dionysia Kolokotsa et al.

Summary: Urban and building typologies have a significant impact on the urban heat island intensity. This study analyzed the effect of various factors, such as building height, street width, aspect ratio, built area ratio, orientation, and dimensions of open spaces, on the distribution of ambient and surface temperature in open spaces. The study found that a higher aspect ratio of the precinct leads to lower cooling potential, and a higher built area ratio decreases the cooling contribution of mitigation measures.

Impacts of urban form and urban heat island on the outdoor thermal comfort: a pilot study on Mashhad

Elham Sanagar Darbani et al.

Summary: In this study, a new method for zoning cities based on outdoor thermal comfort has been proposed and tested in the arid climate of Mashhad, Iran. The research investigates the impact of urban form characteristics on pedestrian thermal comfort, using microclimate simulation and analysis tools. The findings suggest that urban heat island zoning can serve as an alternative to urban form zonings in large cities with limited resources for data collection.

Se Woong Kim et al.

Summary: This study reviewed 55 studies on urban heat island (UHI) variations, revealing that different researches use diverse methods and models to analyze the spatial and temporal changes of UHIs, indicating a lack of universal and specific analytical protocols in existing research. It is suggested that future studies should develop more specific design methods and analytical models, as well as indicators to explain the spatiotemporal variations of UHIs.
