Thermal Behavior and Kinetics of Shenmu Coal Pyrolyzed under Hydrogen-Rich or Methane-Gas-Rich Atmosphere

Chong Zou et al.

Summary: The pyrolysis characteristics of Shenmu coal were studied under H-2 (40%) and CH4 (40%) atmospheres using thermogravimetric analysis. The results showed that H-2 promoted the cleavage of CH-like functional groups but inhibited the cleavage of oxygen-containing functional groups. The pyrolysis activation energy was lower under H-2 and CH4 atmospheres compared to N-2 atmosphere, and the energy distribution was concentrated in specific ranges for each atmosphere.

Study on the Evolution Pattern of the Aromatics of Lignin during Hydrothermal Carbonization

Wendi Sun et al.

Summary: Waste straw, which contains a large amount of lignin, can be effectively utilized through hydrothermal carbonization, a new thermochemical conversion technology. Experimental results showed that hydrothermal carbonization improved the combustion quality of lignin. With increasing hydrothermal carbonization time, the content and heating value of hydrochar increased, and the crystalline structure and aromaticity intensified. Optimal hydrothermal carbonization time for lignin was determined to be 2 hours, resulting in hydrochar fuel with the best performance and aromatization.

Nitrogenous gas formation mechanisms of chemically modified superfine pulverized coal during pyrolysis

Yang Ma et al.

Summary: This study investigates the influence of introduced O-containing groups on the formation pathways of nitrogenous gas during coal pyrolysis. It is found that the introduction of O-containing functional groups alters the formation pathways of nitrogenous gas, particularly through the oxidation of pyridinic and pyrrolic nitrogen.

The structural and pyrolysis characteristics of vitrinite and inertinite from Shendong coal and the gasification performance of chars

Qiuxiang Yao et al.

Summary: Different coal macerals have different pyrolysis characteristics, and studying the pyrolysis characteristics of coal macerals is helpful for coal graded utilization. This study focuses on the structural and pyrolysis characteristics of vitrinite (SD-VC) and inertinite (SD-IC) from Shendong coal. The results show that SD-VC has higher enrichment and generates more coal tar during pyrolysis, while SD-VC char has lower graphitization degree and better gasification performance compared to SD-IC char.

Study on the Reaction Path of -CH3 and -CHO Functional Groups during Coal Spontaneous Combustion: Quantum Chemistry and Experimental Research

Lanjun Zhang et al.

Summary: The mechanism of coal spontaneous combustion (CSC) was studied using quantum chemical calculation method, revealing that CO and CO2 are generated from spontaneous exothermic reactions, with CO being formed more easily than CO2. Low-temperature oxidation experiments confirmed these calculation results and found different generation mechanisms of CO and CO2 in coal samples with different metamorphic degrees.

Yonghong Zhu et al.

Summary: Coal tar is characterized by high oxygen content and ultracomplex composition. In this study, the composition and structure of oxygen-containing compounds (OCs) in medium and low temperature coal tar (MLCT) and its subfractions were investigated at the molecular level. The predominant OCs in MLCT were found to be phenols, with a large proportion of O-x species.

Characterization of Oxygen-Containing Aromatics in a Low- Temperature Coal Tar

Hua-Shuai Gao et al.

Summary: Understanding the molecular composition of oxygen-containing aromatics (OCAs) in low-temperature coal tar (LTCT) is crucial for separating valuable chemicals and catalytically hydrogenating LTCT. Using petroleum ether and CH3OH to enrich OCAs, analysis showed that -OH group is the most abundant oxygen-containing group in LTCT, with most OCAs transferring into lower phase 2 after extraction. After catalytic hydroconversion, unsaturated hydrocarbons (USHCs) and most OCAs in the LTCT were converted to alkanes, while QEOTMS proved to be more effective in identifying OCAs, including strongly polar and/or less volatile OCAs.

A comparative study on thermal behavior of functional groups in coals with different ranks during low temperature pyrolysis

Zhiyuan Niu et al.

Summary: Pyrolysis is widely used in coal conversion and utilization, with a good understanding of its reaction mechanism contributing to process optimization and pollution control. The evolution of functional groups in coal during pyrolysis varies with coal rank, showing different behaviors for aliphatic and aromatic groups. Higher activation energies were observed for decomposition of aliphatic groups and OH at high temperatures compared to low temperatures, while activation energies for C-O and C--O decomposition were relatively low across all stages.
