Gaseous fueling of an adapted commercial automotive spark-ignition engine: Simplified thermodynamic modeling and experimental study running on hydrogen, methane, carbon monoxide and their mixtures

Jose Carlos Urroz et al.

Summary: In this study, methane, carbon monoxide, hydrogen, and binary mixtures of these gases were considered as fuels for a Volkswagen 1.4 L spark-ignition engine. The engine showed similar performance regardless of the gaseous fuel used when the air-fuel equivalence ratio (lambda) was the same. Methane and methane-rich mixtures allowed operating the engine at close to stoichiometric conditions, while hydrogen and hydrogen-rich mixtures could only be used in a very fuel-lean region. A thermodynamic combustion model was developed to understand the trends set by the fuels.

Performance and emission study of low HCNG fuel blend in SI engine with fixed ignition timing

Vivek Pandey et al.

Summary: Natural gas, as a clean fuel, has the advantage to replace gasoline in SI engines. However, it has a low energy density. Hydrogen blended natural gas can improve the fuel characteristics. Ignition timing plays an important role in engine performance. Experimental results show that using hydrogen-blended natural gas can significantly reduce CO, CO2, and HC emissions, and improve thermal efficiency.

Experimental investigation of the impact of CeO2 nanoparticles in Jet-A and Jatropha-SPK blended fuel in an aircraft can-combustor at flight conditions

Vivek Pandey et al.

Summary: With the international consensus on mitigating climate change and the global shift towards clean energy, research on low emissions aviation fuel technology has become increasingly important. This study investigates the emissions impact of Jatropha SPK blended aviation fuel with CeO2 nanoparticles (NPs) on aircraft engine emissions. The results show that CeO2 NPs can effectively reduce NOx, CO, UHC, and soot emissions.

Optimizing operation parameters of a spark-ignition engine fueled with biogas-hydrogen blend integrated into biomass-solar hybrid renewable energy system

Van Ga Bui et al.

Summary: The paper presents the optimal control parameters for the biogas-hydrogen engine, aiming to achieve a balance between performance and pollutant emissions. Adding hydrogen can greatly improve the engine performance but also leads to an increase in NOx emissions.

Effect of H2 blends with compressed natural gas on emissions of SI engine having modified ignition timings

Vivek Pandey et al.

Summary: Compressed natural gas (CNG) is a clean burning fuel, but its energy content is lower compared to hydrogen. In this study, hydrogen was blended with CNG to improve fuel characteristics. The results showed that blending hydrogen with CNG can reduce CO and CO2 emissions, but the impact on NOx emissions is not significant. The study also found that there is no need to adjust the ignition timing to maximum brake torque for reducing NOx emissions. The findings of this study are valuable for vehicle manufacturers and owners who are converting their engines to run on HCNG.

Experimental and computational study on the enhancement of engine characteristics by hydrogen enrichment in a biogas fuelled spark ignition engine

Hiresh Bundele et al.

Summary: The study investigates the influence of hydrogen enrichment on performance, combustion, and emission characteristics of a biogas-fueled engine. The results indicate that increasing the hydrogen share improves combustion characteristics and reduces hydrocarbon emissions, but increases NOx emissions. The engine performs best with a 20% hydrogen share.
