Understanding the pyrolysis synergy of biomass and coal blends based on volatile release, kinetics and char structure

Bin Tian et al.

Summary: The devolatilization characteristics, kinetics, and volatile-char interaction mechanism during co-pyrolysis of a bituminous coal (BC) and four kinds of biomass were investigated to gain new insights into pyrolysis synergy. The results showed significant synergy in volatile release, gas formation, pyrolysis kinetics, and char structure. The co-pyrolysis process increased the maximum devolatilization rate and activated energy, and produced different types of compounds compared to individual pyrolysis. The study also proposed a new volatile-char interaction mechanism to explain the interaction between BC volatiles and bio-chars.

Catalytic intermediate pyrolysis of post-extraction rapeseed meal by reusing ZSM-5 and Zeolite Y catalysts

Wojciech Jerzak et al.

Summary: This study compares the effects of ZSM-5 and Zeolite Y catalysts on intermediate pyrolysis. Zeolite Y showed higher carbon deposition and hydrogen and nitrogen contents during the pyrolysis of rapeseed meal. The catalysts had different effects on the properties of the products, with Zeolite Y producing higher-quality pyro-gas but decreasing hydrogen and carbon oxide concentrations upon reusage.

A critical review on co-gasification and co-pyrolysis for gas production

Sabah Mariyam et al.

Summary: Sustainable energy resources offer a solution to the increasing energy demand caused by population growth and national development. Converting biomass waste into energy through thermochemical processing methods has environmental advantages and increased energy efficiency. This review focuses on the production of gaseous fuel, specifically syngas, from the co-conversion of biomass with other waste. Results indicate that mixing coal with biomass reduces emissions and increases gas yields.

Intermediate Pyrolysis of Bambara Groundnut Shell (BGS) in Various Inert Gases (N2, CO2, and N2/CO2)

Mustapha Danladi Ibrahim et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of inert gases on intermediate pyrolysis and product properties from Bambara Groundnut Shells. The results showed that the inert gases did not significantly affect the yields of bio-oil, biochar, and syngas. The presence of N-2/CO2 gas favored alcohol and phenol production significantly.

Effect of Woody Biomass Gasification Process Conditions on the Composition of the Producer Gas

Alejandro Lyons Ceron et al.

Summary: This paper presents research on the composition of producer gas from the gasification of three woody biomass species, showing that the concentration of combustible gases varies with temperature and equivalence ratio. However, all three wood species exhibited very similar producer gas composition. Higher temperatures enhanced the composition of producer gas, promoting endothermic and exothermic gasification reactions.

A Multi-Objective Approach toward Optimal Design of Sustainable Integrated Biodiesel/Diesel Supply Chain Based on First- and Second-Generation Feedstock with Solid Waste Use

Evgeniy Ganev et al.

Summary: This study proposes a multi-objective approach for the optimal design of a sustainable Integrated Biodiesel/Diesel Supply Chain (IBDSC) based on first- and second-generation feedstocks with solid waste use. Results show that in the case of the economic criterion, 14% of the agricultural land should be used for sunflower cultivation, while for the environmental case, 12% should be used for rapeseed cultivation. The optimal transport for both cases is rail.

An overview on engineering the surface area and porosity of biochar

Lijian Leng et al.

Summary: Surface area and porosity are crucial physical properties of biochar that significantly impact its applications, with biomass composition and pyrolysis temperature being major influencing factors. Activation, particularly through chemical means, is the most effective way to enhance biochar surface area and porosity, while other treatment methods like carbonaceous materials coating and ball milling can also contribute to improvement. Future research should focus on developing treatment technologies to simultaneously enhance the functionality and porous structure of biochar.

CO2 Capture from Flue Gas of a Coal-Fired Power Plant Using Three-Bed PSA Process

Chu-Yun Cheng et al.

Summary: The pressure swing adsorption (PSA) process was used to capture carbon dioxide (CO2) from the flue gas of a coal-fired power plant to reduce CO2 emissions. The extended Langmuir-Freundlich isotherm was used for calculating the equilibrium adsorption capacity, and the linear driving force model was used to describe the gas adsorption kinetics. Additionally, central composite design (CCD) was employed to determine optimal operating conditions for producing high purity CO2 and N2 products.
