An assessment of the utilization of waste apple slurry in bio-succinic acid and bioenergy production

O. V. Okoro et al.

Summary: This study assessed the production of succinic acid from waste apple slurry/pomace as a sustainable and renewable feedstock, comparing two production scenarios and demonstrating the potential of waste pomace as a low-cost feedstock for succinic acid production. One of the production scenarios was identified as the preferred pathway, providing valuable information for policymakers on large-scale bio-succinic acid production projects.

Techno-economic evaluation and life cycle assessment of a biorefinery using winery waste streams for the production of succinic acid and value-added co-products

Sofia Maria Ioannidou et al.

Summary: This study presents a techno-economic evaluation and life cycle assessment of a novel biorefinery that utilizes waste streams generated by wineries to produce bio-based succinic acid, crude phenolic-rich extract, grape-seed oil, calcium tartrate, and crude tannin-rich extract. The research shows that this biorefinery has the potential to develop a sustainable and efficient waste management system.

Dissolved CO2 profile in bio-succinic acid production from sugars-rich industrial waste

Francesco Vigato et al.

Summary: This study investigates the behavior of inorganic carbon source and the effect of pressure on succinic acid fermentation. The results show that pressure has a significant impact on yield, productivity, and CO2 fixation rate. Succinic acid was successfully produced using industrial waste and a gas mixture simulating biogas composition, with a final titer of 25.5 +/- 2.4 g/L.

Life cycle analysis of fermentative production of succinic acid from bread waste

Siddharth Gadkari et al.

Summary: Fermentation of waste bread for succinic acid production shows better environmental performance compared to fossil-based systems, with higher GHG emissions but lower non-renewable energy use. The results highlight the potential of waste bread as a valuable feedstock for bioproduction, with sensitivity analyses emphasizing the importance of solid biomass waste generated in the process.

Eleni Stylianou et al.

Summary: This study successfully achieved cost-effective and efficient bio-based succinic acid production by optimizing nutrient composition. Through the use of Plackett-Burman Designs, central composite design, and constraint optimization, the optimum fermentation medium composition was estimated. The experimental results validated the effectiveness of the optimized fermentation medium conditions.

Sustainable bio-succinic acid production: superstructure optimization, techno-economic, and lifecycle assessment

Rofice Dickson et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the economics, environmental impact, risk assessment, and optimal processing route of bio-SA production from different feedstocks, identifying glycerol as the best feedstock and corn stover as the second best. Seaweed is found to be less suitable for large-scale bio-SA production due to high cost and difficulties in enzyme hydrolysis. Environmental results show that the pathway from glycerol is the most environmentally friendly, followed by corn stover, glucose, and seaweed.
