Effect of particle shape on raceway size and pressure drop in a blast furnace: Experimental, numerical and theoretical analyses

Guangchao Wei et al.

Summary: Experiments and simulations were conducted to investigate the changing laws of blast furnace raceway morphology and pressure drop with cylindrical particles. The results showed that the aspect ratio of the particle influenced the raceway size and pressure drop, with closer aspect ratios resulting in larger raceway sizes and wider particle moving bands. Numerical simulations revealed that the formation of large raceways for sphere-like particles was due to small drag and contact forces, while prolate particles had large contact forces, resulting in smaller raceways. By considering the influence of particle shape, a predictive correlation for raceway size was improved, leading to a 3.4% increase in average calculation accuracy.

DEM investigation on conveying of non-spherical particles in a screw conveyor

Hongyuan Sun et al.

Summary: This study investigates the conveying process of non-spherical particles in a horizontal screw conveyor using the discrete element method (DEM). The results show that particle shape greatly influences particle flow behaviors and conveyor wear. Additionally, the study reveals that particle sphericity significantly affects conveying performance and power consumption of the screw conveyor.

Research on the velocity distribution law of the coke in the chute of blast furnace based on discrete element method

Ke Zhou et al.

Summary: The velocity distribution of coke particles in the rotating chute of a blast furnace plays a crucial role in determining the three-dimensional shape of the burden surface. By using the discrete element method and coordinate transformation, it was found that the velocity distribution of coke in the chute exhibits significant stratification. When the chute is stationary, coke particles near the center or far from the chute edge have higher velocities. When the chute is rotating, coke particles with larger radial movement distances have smaller Z-axis velocities but higher radial velocities.

Reliability study of super-ellipsoid DEM in representing the packing structure of blast furnace

Xiuhao Xia et al.

Summary: The study investigates the authenticity and accuracy requirement of using the super-ellipsoid model to simulate the behaviors of particles with large shape and size dispersity. The results show that the super-ellipsoid particles have advantages in representing real BF particles and can more reasonably reproduce the flow behaviors and packing structure.

CFD-DEM Simulation of Fluidization of Polyhedral Particles in a Fluidized Bed

Zihan Liu et al.

Summary: The study investigates the fluidization behavior of non-spherical polyhedral particles using a numerical CFD-DEM method. The results show that the CFD-DEM model with the polyhedron approach can accurately predict the behaviors of polyhedral particles, which exhibit stronger motion and higher mixing degree compared to spherical particles under the same fluidization gas velocity.
