Recent advances in carbon dioxide geological storage, experimental procedures, influencing parameters, and future outlook

Muhammad Ali et al.

Summary: The oxidation of fossil fuels leads to significant CO2 emissions, contributing to global warming. Storing CO2 in underground formations is a potential solution, but the presence of organic material in geological formations affects storage potential. Studying the wetting characteristics and the impact of organic material is crucial for understanding CO2 behavior and enhancing storage capacity.

City-level emission peak and drivers in China

Yuli Shan et al.

Summary: China's increasing role in global climate change mitigation is highlighted in this study, which provides comprehensive CO2 emission inventories for 287 Chinese cities from 2001 to 2019. The study reveals the emission trends and driving forces in these cities, showing that some cities have proactively peaked their emissions through efficiency improvements and energy use changes, while others passively decreased emissions through economic recession or population loss. The study emphasizes the need for passively emission declined cities to address the reasons behind emission decline and utilize low-carbon targets for economic recovery and carbon mitigation. Proactively peaked cities should seek strategies to maintain emission reductions and serve as successful models for cities with growing emissions.

Assessment to China's Recent Emission Pattern Shifts

Yuru Guan et al.

Summary: Energy and emission data are crucial for climate change research and mitigation efforts, with accurate energy statistics being essential for mitigation strategies and evaluating low carbon energy transition efforts. This study provides updated emission inventories for China and its provinces for 2018 and 2019, while also updating CO2 emission inventories based on revised energy statistics since 2012.

Numerical modelling of long-term CO2 storage mechanisms in saline aquifers using the Sleipner benchmark dataset

Takashi Akai et al.

Summary: The study utilized field data for numerical modeling of long-term CO2 storage and revealed that the dominant storage mechanism during CO2 injection was structural trapping, while residual gas trapping occurred after injection cessation. Significant changes in storage mechanisms occurred within 20 years post-injection, transitioning to solubility trapping after 100 years with decreased residual CO2 trapping. Mass diffusion of CO2 controlled CO2 invasion into the cap rock over a simulation period of 1000 years.
